La. village drops 666 from its number
Source: Associated Press

REEVES, La. -- It's taken 40 years, but this southwest Louisiana village no longer bears the mark of the beast.

Beginning this month, residents and businesses can change the first three digits of their phone numbers from 666 - depicted in the Bible as the mark of the beast - to 749.

Mayor Scott Walker said one of the biggest hangups he's had, both as mayor and as a lifelong resident of Reeves, is the reaction he's gotten when giving people his number. He describes it as a pause, followed by the admonition: "Y'all have to change that."

... "This boils down to, this is a very, very religious community," Walker said.

6. My new bank account number has "666" in it.
One day, after I wrote a check (yeah, I'm one of those) a cashier at Farm and Fleet said to me "Doesn't that bother you?" Me:Doesn't what bother me? Her: That you've got 666 on your checks. That's Satan's number.

I hadn't really thought about it until then. I couldn't imagine anyone caring. I replied: Well, Satan may be upset, cuz it's my number now.

She was perplexed. So was I.

14. Yeah and apparently lots of people here
are either to young or have forgotten that our side like to place that number on Raygun when he was president "666 the mark of the beast". Raygun was considered to be the forerunner to the true evil (that's why the number was associated with him). It seems to have come true too when you see the real evil beast we now have as our "leader".

25. I was once in a grocery store
And a woman showed me a package of hamburger where the price and weight had caused the price to be $6.66. This lady actually asked the butcher "what she should do". She was told that the store could discount the package by a penny to make it $6.65. This made the customer happy.

instead of $10.00?

What would she had done if the merchandise price was less than $6.66 but the price after tax was $6.66.

28. The so-called numerals of the beast are not "666" which is Indo-Arabic notation.
Said alleged beastly number was actually noted a series of Greek letters used before our modern system gained currency.

So one might claim that Triple 6 is the Number of the Beast, the good denizens ought to be safe, as it is not the Numeral of the Beast!

so, for that matter, did half of Cockeysville, MD. The more saintly half had 667; later 628 would be added as well, for the agnostics, I guess. :sarcasm:

39. A bit off topic but interesting side note...
This reminds me of the superstition that some in the building trade take seriously i.e. omitting the 13th floor label or making the floor literally uninhabitable (building support or similar). I've never seen one example personally but one of my professors mentioned that it was a client's request he had to comply with for one of his earlier projects.

People are interesting that way - the way it gets incorporated into one's culture / society and than expressed in different manners.

I've also heard stories where clients made it a point to change their address numbers if by chance it was 666.

In certain asian cultures, Feng Shui is a big thing that can determine placement and nature of building entries, or even planning layouts - all in the name of good / bad luck. I find it fascinating actually. Now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if there has ever been a study or survey of building with these added "requirements" and how well or poorly they fared?

Didn't mean to hijack this thread but it seemed an interesting tangent as an aside topic.

40. reminds me of when AZ changed highway 666 to 191
191???WTF?

Anyway they tried to claim it wasn't because of superstitious nonsense but that it was actually a north south highway and should have had an odd number anyway.

My theory was they were tired of road sign theft.
