Huckabee: U.S. Should Monitor Pakistanis Coming Into Country
Source: ABC News

ABC News' Kevin Chupka reports: During a press conference Thursday night in West Des Moines, Iowa, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee suggested that after the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the United States should, "have an immediate, very clear monitoring of our border, and particularly to make sure, if there's any unusual activity of Pakistanis coming into the country. We just need to be very very thorough in looking at every aspect of our own security internally."

While his argument echoed his calls for strict immigration law, Huckabee argued Bhutto's death should not be politicized.

"I don't think it's appropriate to respond in a political way on this," he said. "I think what we need to do is maintain our focus on the fact that it's a real tragic day in the world when a significant political leader, a person of great courage and I think former Prime Minister Bhutto is a person of great courage and she was willing to knowingly risk her life to go back into Pakistan to lead her country once again knowing full well the dangers of it but also showing a remarkable sense of fortitude in perusing it."

He added, "She (Bhutto) represents a threat to Islamic fundamentalists in that as a woman, an educated, sophisticated, strong, capable woman leader, that does pose a threat to those that don’t believe a woman should not be given that platform and that level of equality."

Huckabee also attempted to clarify comments he made earlier about marshal law in Pakistan. In Orlando, earlier in the day, he suggested that one of the United States' priorities should be to determine, "what impact does it have on whether or not there’s gonna be martial law continued in Pakistan, suspension of the constitution."

Marshal law having ceased two weeks ago, tonight Huckabee attempted to clear up his gaffe: "And what I said was, and it’s not that I was unaware that it was suspended two weeks ago, lifted to weeks ago. The point was, continued, would it be reinstated, would it be placed back in –- all the aspects of marshal law have not been completely lifted, even now. There’s still a heavy hand I think Musharraf has used."

7. I've noticed a lot of misspellings in the news crawls
and non-sensicalheadlines in the newspapers over the last several years.

I'm convinced it is because it is not journalists but propagandists writing this stuff.

9. I'd actually blame it on the Internet...
and the resulting need to post news as soon as possible, without giving it a careful copyediting.

15. It's not as if they can't go back two minutes later and correct their errors.
While CNN, in general, is painful to watch, their news crawl has been deemed torture by the Hague.

16. And they often do.
A lot of times, you'll go back to an online story, and errors have been fixed. Getting the story out there first has become more important than getting the story out there accurately. I don't blame that on journalists becoming propagandists as much as I blame it on the high-speed world we live in and the competitive nature of the business.

19. Why? I have noticed it more and more in newspapers and on
TV. Not many people take pride in the work they do now.

3. Extremist christian fundie types are a much more serious danger to this country
They are the ones who are a much better position to institute their own version of Sharia law, which they seem to be so deathly afraid of. What those witless dolts don't realize is that the Puritanical society they admire so much isn't very much different from Sharia law.

14. abso-freaking-lutely.
Huckabee possesses no moral high ground vis-a-vis muslims in matters relating to women's rights.

I doubt he even realizes that Bhutto herself was muslim.

20. Yes it is. Whoever keeps writing it "marshal" law must have seen too many "Gunsmoke" episodes.
"Marshal" law is the kind of law practiced by Matt Dillon.
"Martial" law is the kind imposed by military dictators.

21. Huckabee Ties Bhutto's Assassination to Illegal Immigration
Source: CBS

PELLA, IOWA – A foreign issue made domestic. An assassination abroad turned into a hardline immigration stance. After Mike Huckabee was done gladhanding with Iowans at the overcrowded Pizza Ranch restaurant, journalists grilled Huckabee on a hard right turn he took from the subject of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination to illegal immigration.

In his speech today, Huckabee said it should be of concern to Americans that 660 illegal Pakistanis crossed the American border last year.

One reporter asked if that was ethnic baiting?

“No, not at all. I’m just saying maybe that a lot of Americans who live in Pella, Iowa maybe look halfway around the world and say, how does that affect me?” said Huckabee.

“And the way it affects them is that we need to understand that violence and terror is significant when it happens in Pakistan, it’s more significant when it happens in our own cities, and it happens if people can slip across our border and we have no control over it,” he continued.

“The fact is the immigration issue is not so much about people coming to pick lettuce or make beds. It’s about people that can come with a shoulder fired missile and can do serious damage and harm to us, and that’s what we need to be worried about. And the unsecure borders that we have pose a real national security threat.”

25. Yeah, what if Benazir Bhutto had come to the U.S.?
Why, then, we'd have car bombings and shootings right here.

Well, actually we do. Never mind!
