Huckabee delivers Christmas sermons in San Antonio
Source: San Antonio Express-News

Republican Mike Huckabee steered clear of presidential politics during two services Sunday at Cornerstone Church, but the ordained Southern Baptist minister appeared to establish his religious bona fides with thousands of evangelicals — the group largely fueling his recent rise in the polls.

Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, delivered back-to-back Christmas sermons at the North Side megachurch. During his first appearance, he won a pair of standing ovations from the near-capacity crowd.

Politics, he said, wasn't the point of his talks Sunday. The closest he came to campaign mode was a semi-veiled reference to flak he took recently for a television ad showing him next to Christmas tree. In the ad, he said during the Christmas season what “really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and friends.”

“You can find Santa at every mall. You can find discounts in every store,” Huckabee said. “But if you mention the name of Jesus, as I found recently, it upsets the whole world. Forgive me, but I thought that was the point of the whole day.”

5. Store this for later use
Here's Huckabee preaching at the church run by the Apocalyptic fantasist John Hagee who's as anti-gay and anti-Islamic as Hal Lindsey. Hagee is a certified kook and the likely successor to Jerry Falwell. He's even got the jowls.

So I hope there are staffers from all the Democratic campaigns paying attention here. Associating Huckabee with the lunatic John Hagee would be a winner in some toss-up states late in the general.

Huckabee angers some Catholics
Sun Dec 23, 2007 5:32pm EST

By Jim Forsyth

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Rising Republican presidential
candidate Mike Huckabee risked his standing with Catholic
voters on Sunday by courting his evangelical base at the
church of a controversial preacher accused of disparaging
Catholics.

There are a few remnants of anti-Catholicism among
evangelical Christians in the South but the two sides have
found much common political ground over the past three
decades in their strident opposition to abortion and gay
marriage.

But the visit to Cornerstone, pastor John Hagee's imposing
"mega-church" in the Texas city of San Antonio, was
fraught with political perils for Huckabee given his efforts
to woo conservative Catholics.

10. Wow. I wonder if America is going to get its very own Ayatollah?
Instead of press conferences, he can just have public prayer and condemn anyone who asks him a question for lacking faith. :eyes:
