Medicaid Funding for Schools Cut
Source: The Washington Post

The Bush administration yesterday eliminated about $700 million a year in Medicaid reimbursements to schools, sidestepping an attempt by Congress to block such a move.

The new rule, issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, is expected to save the federal government $3.6 billion over five years, transferring those costs to school districts.

With more than 12 months left of this criminal regime, the destruction of the middle class and poor continues. The bushco health and education doctrine: ALL CHILDREN WILL BE LEFT BEHIND.

3. Unfortunately the services will be cut
Getting a new school tax passed is virtually impossible these days. The school systems will just be forced to cut out the services instead.

10. Proving once again why school funding should not
be tied to property values.

Wealthy school districts will continue to fund the services

7. Most of this is related to special education. Feds were picking up the
lions share of the special cost related to these classes. Hey, you f**ker! have you ever heard about the "least of these"? You just screwed them so your answer is obviously "When did I see them and not help them?" *ss is one of the goats.

12. Sorry, the Federal government has been behind on its obligation to pay
for Federally mandated special education services for decades. The original ruling permitting schools to charge off some of their special ed. costs to Medicaid barely covers anything. Meaning- so long as the Fed's don't pay their full share of a Districts special ed. costs through state allotments- Districts have to make up the shortfall.

8. Why would Medicaid give $$ to schools? The med. ctr. in schools is...
free to all the students that attend the school. Where does Medicaid come in?

Medicaid provides funding for extremely poor people to obtain medical care at certain, government-authorized healthcare centers. I've never heard of Medicaid funding schools.

9. I should've read the article first. I see now that Medicaid provided therapy
of varying sorts to schools, despite the income level of the student's parents.

The article also says that Medicaid will cont. to provide those services for the extremely poor students.

I can't say that I disagree with that, based on my understanding of Medicaid. Except possibly for those students who are poor, but not quite poor enough for Medicaid. But that takes me to the whole issue of healthcare for all, which is, I think, what the issue is. Healthcare for those who can't afford it but who aren't poor enough to qualify for free healthcare.

Once again Congress is unable to stop Bush and his cohorts in whatever, absolutely whatever, they want to do.

11. This is the deal. Because Special Education has been underfunded by the Fed's for decades...
in the last 5-8 years the Fed's made a deal with the states. Basically it goes like this, schools can charge Medicaid for services such as in school school social work, evaluations, speech and language services, OT and PT. This is not Medicaid money that takes away services for kids at a Doctors office or a Dentists office.

So basically this means that the Fed's will return to funding special education, a federally mandated service, at about a 40% level and no reimbursement from the Federal government.
