More Than 405,000 Toys Recalled Due to Lead Paint Contamination (new recall)
Source: Las Vegas Now

More than 405,000 children's products made in China, most of them toy cars, were recalled Wednesday for containing dangerous levels of lead, a government safety group announced.

. . .

The latest recalls follow almost weekly announcements in the past several months of lead-contaminated products imported from China, many of them toys.

. . .

"There's are billions of toys coming in. There's a lot to go through," Vallese said. "We don't think we've seen the end of them. But we do feel confident the numbers will start going down."

There are weekly announcements?

Not surprisingly, the story of this week's recall is only found in the small Las Vegas Now news site.

1. Just what part of "no lead-based paint" do the manufacturers not understand?
Mattel has already apologized to the Chinese government for giving them the "wrong specs" which, one assumes, said using lead-based paint was "okie-dokie." Mattel, of course, didn't apologize to the American people for attempting to foist off on us unsafe toys.

The dangers of lead-based paint has been known for decades. I don't understand these lapses in judgment or memory that lead to lead-based paint being used for commercial applications.

Wasn't there a ban of lead-based paint enacted decades ago? And are these people thinking they can get away with this?

2. Giving the wrong spec is exactly what I suspected!
I worked in Mfg. for quite a few years, and although it wans't making toys, we did a LOT of private lable and special products to spec. I KNOW what the manfacturer must do, and when I first heard about this problem, I suspected what was going on. Co. contacts several mfgs. about making what they want, and they make URE everyone understands that the LOWEST BIDDER will get the business. When the bids come in, they're all too high, so the Co. says what can you do to get that price DOWN? Just another example of the greedy execs of the co's to put more $$ in THEIR pocket, and "most likely won't get caught"! Well, this time, THEY GOT CAUGHT! I don't fault China for this at all! It is the responsibility of the purchasing co. to make sure they are getting what they ordered!

4. Just because there is a recall, what makes you think they were pulled off
the shelves?

Even the date rape toy is still sitting on shelves and still being sold.

If you can't find a recalled item on the shelves, many of the recalled lead toys are being sold on EBay.
