Wal-Mart shopper blames Iraq 'flashback' for assault on greeter
Source: AP

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - A Wal-Mart shopper said a "flashback" from her military service in Iraq made her shove a 70-year-old greeter at the store.

Jessica R. Bogart, 24, was sentenced Monday to four days in jail for assault.

"My first instinct was to get away. I pushed her," Bogart told Columbia County Judge Thomas A. James Jr.

James replied: "Nonetheless, the lady was hurt."

Bogart was leaving a Wal-Mart store near Bloomsburg in February when greeter Ahnastacia Miller asked to see a receipt for items in Bogart's cart that were not in shopping bags. Bogart shoved Miller to the floor and Miller hit her head.

3. She should have put them in ghost mode..
I do not see greeters or hear door alarms going off leaving retail stores. I do not steal, so if they want to hassle me they can go to the trouble of detaining me.

Some moron looking at a ticket is a waste of my time.

However blowing your stack is not all that helpful either.

4. What dumbshit hired a 70 year old woman to make sure people had paid for their items?
If Bogart is suffering from PTSD, she needs professional help. I'm surprised the judge didn't require it as part of her probation. I'm sorry for her children. :(

8. This is a tad odd...
"In addition to the jail time, Bogart was sentenced to 18 months of probation. She will also pay a $300 fine and $1,986 for the victim's medical expenses."

$1,986?

The woman was injured on Wal-Mart property, while on duty, she also would have medicare, and possibly supplemental insurance...so who gets the $1,986?

15. Not so sure...that is what Workman's Comp is all about...
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 06:05 PM by rasputin1952
if hurt on the job, you pay nothing...

And why a fine that goes to the Court? I'd be more obliged if the money went to the woman injured.

17. I would guess
It is most likely for out of pocket. If not, then this would replace the insurance or worker's comp (i.e. they would get the money). For instance, if you get hit in a hit and run, your insurance pays for it. If the driver is later found and their insurance picks up the tab, your insurance gets the money and not you.

10. Wal-Mart shouldn't put older wo/men in a position that may likely end up in a confrontation.

11. Wal Mart greeters over 65?The fucking store manager should be shot!
The fool should be fired on general principles. You don't put an old lady by the door to check packages. By the time she's done it's Springtime.:sarcasm:

Seriously, the company's policy needs to be adjusted. That's just looking for trouble.

12. IIRC Wal-Mart makes money off of old employees
I saw in one of those Wal-Mart exposé documentaries that they like to hire the elderly and then take out life insurance policies on them.
And it sure isn't their families who are named as beneficiaries.

13. It ought to be a law that a company can't take out such a policy
unless they also take out one for at least the same amount to benefit the employee's family.

18. They usually ask to see the receipt when you leave the WalMart
here. I guess they do have many folks that do steal. They have so many employees I don't know how anyone could steal.
