Tokyo 'aware' of humpback killing anger
Source: Sydney Morning Herald

The new Japanese Ambassador in Canberra says he's keeping Tokyo informed of the widespread anger in Australia over Japan's plan to resume killing humpback whales.

But Ambassador Taka-aki Kojima strongly defended his government's legal right to harvest whales - a source of mounting friction between the two countries.

"Of course as ambassador of Japan I have reported (as have) the consul-generals ... all the important media relations and protests against the (whaling)," he said.

"I did report from my embassy to Tokyo what is the reaction in Australia, especially in regard to the humpback whale."

...

Mr Kojima said the new Labor government of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, which has vowed to use the military to monitor Japanese whaling activities and take evidence for a potential international court case, had not yet to spoken to him directly on the issue.

"So far we haven't had any direct approach from the (new Australian government) as yet," he said.
