Storm Olga forms over Virgin Islands
Source: Miami Herald

<snip>

"Ten days after the official end of the hurricane season, a storm named Olga formed Monday night over the Virgin Islands.

Forecasters said the system -- technically a subtropical storm -- was moving toward Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, carrying powerful bursts of wind and rain.

"Heavy rains over Puerto Rico and Hispaniola could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides and interests in these areas should continue to monitor the progress of this system," said senior forecaster Jack Beven of the National Hurricane Center in West Miami-Dade County.

A meteorological hybrid, subtropical storms -- like the more familiar tropical storms -- produce winds of at least 39 mph but lack an intense inner core and the classic circular shape of tropical storms or hurricanes."

8. It also happened in 05, the year of Katrina
that's the year they had to go into the Greek alphabet. I don't think the 05 season actually ended until January 06.

This is twice now in 3 years there were named storms in December. 1978 was an aberation. This could be considered symptomatic.
