Huckabee rises to 2nd in GOP race
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Mike Huckabee has vaulted from nowhere into second place in the Republican presidential race, riding a burst of support from evangelicals, Southerners and conservatives, a nationwide poll showed Friday.

The surge by the former Arkansas governor has come largely at the expense of Fred Thompson, according to the national survey by The Associated Press and Ipsos. Thompson has dropped after failing to galvanize the party's right-wing core as much as some had expected.

Rudy Giuliani remains the front-runner, yet while his support long has been steady it shows signs of fraying. Huckabee's growing strength in the South has come as the former New York mayor's support there has dropped, the poll found.

1. RW fundamentalists and evangelical "Christians" still control GOP politics. Huckabee
is running on one issue: praying/Jesus/God/bible. Nothing else. Most 'murcans love it.

2. Hmm. 6 of one, half-dozen of the other.
On one hand, they've got the divorced womanizing city fund embezzler, and on the other, well, don't make me say it.

They deserve to have to choose from these two extra-special GOPers.

4. And we have
to run someone who can beat either one of them.

This should not be so hard.

She said hopefully.

3. I heard Huckabee on an NPR game show a few months ago.
I knew nothing of his politics, other than he was a repub. He's definitely a candidate to watch, as he was quite witty and down-to-earth, and I thought that he seemed like a really cool person. Of course now I know that he's just to the right of Pat Robertson, but he seems like a likable fellow (and omg we ALL know what that has meant in these elections!!!).

8. I heard him on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me," too, and he WAS a hoot!
When his segment was over, I said under my breath, "Damn, why can't he be on OUR side?"

16. I am quite afraid...............Huckabee is dangerous, folks.
Heck I have two dem friends who sent him money and are planning to vote for him!! Plus he is now flip flopping on illegals and promising to "close" the borders, etc, and that plays right into the hate the illegals crowd.

I keep hearing how much they "like" him...................

Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 11:56 PM by QuestionAll
but then, so did the shrub.

i guess it all depends on whether the media decides to give the repuke candidate a pass...:yoiks:

be afraid...be VERY afraid.

especially if hillary becomes the candidate, and it turns out that bill's been bangin' tail like the old days...THAT would suck for our side.

and you can just GUESS what type of candidates he'd nominate for the supreme court.

if huckabee becomes president...i may have to just...die.

19. He's coming up like crazy and had I not heard what I've
heard around, well, I'm afraid. And you are right about Hillary - he could have a real chance against her if he gets it. But I'm NOT a Hillary fan and I think almost anyone could have a real chance against her. (sorry folks).

God this is scary.................

10. I find the constant polling about Iowa a little tiresome, to be honest.
Yeah, it's the lead off contest. Yeah, it's a big media focus and holds some kick for those that do well. Yet it has never been the end all and be all of the primary contests.

The seemingly 'poll a day' from the media is political overkill, imho.

We've a little ways to go before either party gets a nominee.

11. My late father, who was a very wise man,
always said the only "poll" that mattered was when people actually voted.

Have any of you been polled? I've been voting since 1972, and I never have.

12. I used to say stuff like that, but in 2006 the polls were pretty spot on.
I made all of my predictions based off polls and end momentum and I got the exact number of House seats and Senate seats. I was a little off on governors, but meh.

15. I told you so. Well, this board anyway. And I don't believe
he is 2nd, I believe he is first. He is leading Romney by double digits in Iowa according to a poll out today - and Hillary is behind Obama.

With an Obama/Huckabee matchup?

18. Huckabee is finished ...

Willie Horton/Mike Dukakis will look like a falling on stairs compared the what the other Republicans will do to Huckabee. That poll might as well be a year old.

29. The poll was taken before the Huckabee commutations ..
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 08:50 PM by BearSquirrel2
The poll was taken before the Huckabee commuations were publicized. One commutee bludgeoned a woman, raped her, ran her over with his car several times and then dumped her in a swamp while she was still alive. This is not a forensic reconstruction ... IT'S A CONFESSION!!!

This guy doesn't pay attention to what he's doing. This is not a deal killer as Republicans don't seem to care about aloof management styles. However, the effect will not sit well to "law and order" types. The other Republicans will have commercials on this and Huckabee will be done for. Finished ... He's a dead man walking politics wise.

23. I'm not surprised.
Huckabee is someone we should fear. He has charisma & a sort of "Everyman" appeal that no one else on the GOP side has. And we all know how far that got Boy George.

As I've said before, Giuliani will never get the nomination. I doubt he'll last past Feb. 6. He won't win any of the Southern states, except maybe Florida.

25. The fundies are coming home to roost
According to Rasmussen, Romney and McCain's numbers haven't changed since late September. What's changed is a small erosion in support for Guiliani and a cratering in support for Thompson

Guiliani 23% (9/07) 18% (12/07)
Thompson 25% (9/07) 9% (12/07)

I don't see Huckabee getting any higher than 30% -- corporate Republicans know he's a loser in 2008. They're going to push either Romney or Guiliani (my money is on Romney -- Guiliani baggage will make him a clay pidgeon next year).
