Moose kills Richardson spc. back from Iraq

A soldier assigned to Fort Richardson, Alaska, died of injuries received when his car struck a moose Dec. 2 in South Anchorage.

Spc. Stephen Cavanaugh, who spent a year in Iraq with the 98th Maintenance Company, had redeployed in March and was recovering from brain trauma resulting from exposure to multiple explosions during the rotation, according to an article in the Anchorage Daily News.

He also had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, the article stated, and was assigned in October to a Warrior Transition Unit where he was being cared for.

“There was a moose — a mom and a calf — that ran out in front of him,” Reeder told the newspaper. “It’s one of those things that happens in Alaska. A moose runs out in the dark and there’s nothing you can do.”

The impact flung the moose on top of Cavanaugh’s Camaro convertible, crushing him, she said. The moose died in the crash and its calf ran off, according to the article.

Moose are generally tall enough that a low slung car doesn't take a direct hit from the bulk of the moose and passes underneath. I wish he had been driving a winter beater instead of a convertable. RIP Spc. Cavanaugh.
