Winter illnesses kill at least 20 Afghan children
Some 20 children have died from influenza or pneumonia in the remote central Afghan province of Ghor during the last week, a humanitarian official confirmed on Sunday.

Dr Hamid Sanjuqi of the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance said the illnesses which killed the children were likely to be influenza and pneumonia but no independent verification was possible because the area was so inaccessible.

"I have had reports from the field that 20 children have been confirmed dead but there could be as many 30 dead" from the same outbreak, he told AFP.
