LONDON (AFP) - Two years after the United States opened the controversial Guantanamo Bay jail in Cuba to hold prisoners captured during its "war on terror", British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) said the future of nine Britons detained there would be resolved in weeks.

"And without saying anything that pre-judges whether they might be guilty or not guilty, it is extremely important that we balance up the absolutely proper consideration that they get a fair and decent trial with the need to protect people in this country."

The paper (The Times) quoted the US ambassador at large for war crimes, Pierre-Richard Prosper, as saying detainees could be repatriated if Britain was able to "manage" them after their return.

This could mean prosecution or detention. According to the daily, officials indicated it could also mean surveillance by British police rather than a trial.
