AMARA, Iraq (Reuters) - Scores of angry protesters gathered Sunday in Amara in southern Iraq (news - web sites), demanding compensation for at least five Iraqis killed when police and British troops opened fire to quell a violent demonstration.

In the nearby city of Basra, an Iraqi-born U.S. citizen working for the civilian administration in southern Iraq was found shot dead, a spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) said.

1. First it was stones, now it's grenades

...guess somebody got the word that firing into a stonethrowing crowd is a disproportionate use of force.

What's with the bayonets? That's a Polish diplomatic touch? Do they still have price tags on them? Gen. Sanchez must be Mr. Sensitivity. I also found the Reuter's slide slow interesting. It clearly shows some people were involved in throwing stones.

It is also interesting that the British medic wears the red cross indicating suggesting he is a non combatant under international law, but is brandishing an assault rifle.

2. Sticks and stones and tin cans

packed with explosives. You mean they weren't throwing sugary sweets and flowers at our troops. Gee, I guess what with 20,000 fellow countrymen slain and another 7,000 in detention for the last 9 months, rampant joblessness and violent crime on the rise, could it be that the Iraqi people aren't too happy with the liberation-occupation?
Somebody needs to alert FAUX news to this disturbing trend.

3. Underemployed folks in Iraq is at 50%

were watching the protest from a distance, but there were no immediate reports of violence.

A number of protests over lack of jobs have been staged in Iraq since Saddam Hussein was toppled in April.

Clashes not the first

On Tuesday, police opened fire in the southern city of Basra on former members of Saddam's military demanding payment of a promised stipend. At least four people were wounded.

A joint United Nations/World Bank report issued in October, put the number of unemployed and underemployed people in Iraq at 50% of the country's 26 million population. Of those, about 400,000 are Iraqi soldiers who lost their jobs when US administrator, Paul Bremer, abolished the army.
