Sebelius signs trade pact with Cuba
Sebelius signs trade pact with Cuba
By Scott Rothschild, Journal-World

Sunday, January 11, 2004

Topeka — Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has signed a joint communique with Cuba's largest food importer, hoping to increase trade between Kansas companies and the island country.

Under the deal, the Empresa Comercializadora de Alimentos, also known as Alimport, will spend $10 million on Kansas agricultural products.

In return, Kansas state government will try to promote business opportunities in the Cuban market and encourage normalization of trade relations between the United States and Cuba.

The communique is nonbinding, but signals an intent by both sides to do business, said Patty Clark, director of the agricultural marketing division of the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The accord could have been made without Sebelius' participation, but the governor wanted to sign it "to add weight and influence to the negotiation process on behalf of Kansas companies," Clark said.

Gov. Sibelius

The Kansas Legislature would have completed its resolution last year to end the embargo on Cuba, but the effort was hijacked by Wichita Republican Cuban "exile" Rep. Mario Goico.

That resolution will be passed, nonetheless.

1. You have seen many strange things in politics I know
And this will not make the impact on your psychic that it does me, unless you have lived in Kansas or a neighboring State. (I used to live in KC,Mo)

Think about it.....with all the right wing Bible thumping flag waving going on in the US today.......

Kansas with a female...PROGRESSIVE....DEMOCRATIC....Governor

There is hope in the World after all.

2. The strangest thing is the politics of this issue

The majority in the House of Representatives, the majority in the Senate, the majority of Governors, the majority of State Legislators, the majority of Cuban-Americans, and the majority of Americans who are paying attention want the embargo against Cuba lifted now.

More than 38 states are currently defying the Bush Doctrine on Cuba but all the leading 2004 Democratic* presidential contenders are defying the will of the majority and continue pander to the extremist right wing minority instead:

Democratic Presidential Candidates on Cuba

Of the ten current democratic hopefuls, Representative Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is the only one who supports an end to the embargo.

There's not much hope imho when even DU Admin panders to the right wing minority despite the mountain of evidence at their fingertips.

3. The Embargo is dumb!!!!
It leaks like a sive and is only trotted out to pander to the Miami/Cuban voters. And now I see they are going to prosecute someone who visited there illegally 10 years ago. Select a couple of cases to get on the front page to keep them voting Republican, then go back to sneaking.

An amazing thing is that these here computers we use to post on DU can actually be used to do a little research too.

Such as,

Charts from www.opensecrets.org

Keep listening to the "librul" media, and you can keep on thinking that Cuban-Americans are all repugs. Do a little research and you'll discover that they are not.

Racenut20, check out the Cuba threads. Contrary to the beliefs of some, there is actually a lot of information to be gotten from them. From people who have done much research on the subject and/or have actually been to Cuba.
