Alleged shoplifter dies in Morgan Hill (Calif.) after store security guards detain him
Source: San Jose Mercury News

Morgan Hill police said today that a 47-year-old man died after being detained by security guards at Safeway for allegedly stealing $700 worth of food and alcohol.

Cmdr. David Swing said the man, a Greenfield resident whom police have not identified, started to run out of the store at 840 E. Dunne Ave. about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Security guards soon caught up with him and put him in handcuffs, which is when the guards told police the man became "unresponsive."

Police arrived within minutes and could not find the man's pulse. They tried CPR, Swing said, until medical crews came. The man was taken by ambulance to St. Louise Regional Hospital where he died.

2. That has been happening over and over. Police take someone into custody, they die....
On another note, how the hell can you steal &700.00 worth of groceries? I mean even if you fill up the entire shopping cart with expensive stuff, it still wont come out to 200.00.

5. That is a good point. And nowadays the really
"priceless" stuff, ie the good booze and the cigarettes, are locked up.

My landlord and I had a burglar come into the house and take his antique clock and my son's $ 500
bicycle. The burglar got away, but my son and I apprehended the guy abut an hour later (Easy to identify - he was on my son's bike and the landlord's clock was in the bike's handlebar basket.

We tried to get the police interested in going to the burglar's house and charging him with the crime. But the cops were not interested.

And they admonished my son and me for capturing the thief - we should have let the law take care of it!

But let someone shoplife food from a major store and the cops are all over the perp. Even to the point of death.

9. An elderly man was picked up for shoplifting in the local store
the other day. I happened to be standing in line to pay at the time and the cashier said it happens about once a day. Very sad.

10. Meat. Lots and lots of meat.
> On another note, how the hell can you steal &700.00 worth of groceries?

A good cut of meat now costs $10-$15 for a pound or two
of meat. So one would only need to steal 50-70 packages
of meat (at, say, 70-100 pounds total) to reach $700.
You could easily fit that into a grocery cart.

15. Rolled it through the self-check? Put it on the bottom of the cart...

What? You never saw Animal House when Pinto steals
the meat? ;)

Meanwhile...

Rolled it through the self-check? Put it on the bottom of
the cart and hope the checker doesn't look at the cart-
bottom mirror? Subborn the checker?

14. "...how the hell can you steal $700.00 worth of groceries?"
The article says "food and alcohol. You can run up a $700 bill pretty fast if your "purchase" included a few bottles of 18-year-old single-malt scotch.

16. heart attack?
Either way...shouldn't have been stealing.

Don't ever steal...don't ever disrespect people, don't ever do anything that could potentially excalate to a situation beyond your control, and where you can put yourself in danger. Good rule to live by.
