Illegal Immigrant Rescues Boy in Desert
Source: The Guardian

PHOENIX (AP) - A 9-year-old boy looking for help after his mother crashed their van in the southern Arizona desert was rescued by a man entering the U.S. illegally, who stayed with him until help arrived the next day, an official said.

The 45-year-old woman, who eventually died while awaiting help, had been driving on a U.S. Forest Service road in a remote area just north of the Mexican border when she lost control of her van on a curve on Thanksgiving, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

The van vaulted into a canyon and landed 300 feet from the road, he said. The woman, from Rimrock, north of Phoenix, survived the impact but was pinned inside, Estrada said.

Her son, unhurt but disoriented, crawled out to get help and was found about two hours later by Jesus Manuel Cordova, 26, of Magdalena de Kino in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. Unable to pull the mother out, he comforted the boy while they waited for help.

21. There are people here in Oklahoma who would agree with that statement.
We have a lovely new anti-illegal immigrant law, and I can't believe the comments that come out of people's mouths over it--nasty, vile, hateful, bigoted language that would make you think we were living back in the day when public lynchings were the norm (and I don't think we're that far from being back there again). It makes me ashamed to be an Oklahoman.

2. Think back to all the nastiness pointed at Dennis Kucinich
When he reminded us that "there are no illegal people."

How often do we depersonalize those "wet backs", huh?

This person was a great deal more decent than the ones "guarding" the border and shooting on site.

20. But didn't he also say we should get rid of NAFTA which has ruined
Mexico and pushed them over the border... Don't you think they'd rather cultivate their own land, rather than ours.. Push them out and send our seniors in to enjoy a retirement with nice weather.. is that the whole point?

A republican, on the other hand, would have ignored the boy so he could pull himself up by his bootstraps.

Yes, we all get it, the Republicans have some dangerous and stupid ideas. But really, do you think any one of them in the same situation would have left the kid in the desert to die? Is there really a need to make a cheap shot out of *everything*?

he would still be there, only somewhat DEAD by now, had a Republican passed by him.

This story reminds you of the Good Samaritan story in the New Testament which said that other travelers had passed by the suffering man before the Samaritan happened to see him.

A-holes have been present in great numbers for a very long time, unfortunately.

Hope the child will grow up remembering the unsual degree of concern and self-sacrifice involved in the man's forgetting his own freedom in deference to the child's greater need for protection.

The Idiots (R) want cheap labor, but don't want them voting. The Democrats don't want illegal activity but figure that if we're not going to deport them, then why not allow them citizenship and let them vote for their representative officials. Am I wrong?

caring more about this poor kid and a dying woman, than your own neck. You did the right thing, the humane thing. That child was lucky you were there for him, though I doubt he'll feel lucky for a long time to come. What an awful thing for a 9 year old to go through.

and for caring more about him than your own safety. Acts like these should be the norm, but they aren't, so you are to be commended for doing the right thing.

I wonder what will happen to the boy now. The poor little guy lost both parents within two months. I hope he has caring relatives to take him in.

37. Great Column Asks Bush to Give Him Green Card
http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_117545.asp

"Here's What Jesus Did.
by Roy Exum

"I come to you this morning on behalf of a different Jesus than you know, but one with not only the same name but with much the same heart. Jesus Manuel Cordova is currently being held in an Arizona prison as an illegal immigrant because he wanted very desperately to be caught. He wanted the cops to come because his “newest friend” needed help badly...

Cordoba was most assuredly tired and hungry ...Cordova was just 60 miles southwest of Tucson. He was in. He had made it. But here was our nation’s newest orphan, age nine, and the Mexican stood his ground. He stayed. He tended to a horrified boy he’d never before seen, who he couldn’t even talk to, throughout what was undoubtedly a very long night.

...Cordova ... was placed in the back of a squad car and jailed ...So, if I were the president of these United States, not just the governor of Arizona or an erstwhile presidential candidate, I would call the Tucson office and tell them to let Jesus Manuel Cordova take a hot shower, and tell them to get him some clean clothes and give him all to eat he could hold, because I was sending a plane to pick him up.

I would then personally walk with him into the office of the Department of Immigration first thing Monday morning and tell them to hurry with the paperwork because ...this is one “green card” I want to sign myself. I would make a show of it, not only to honor a heroic deed but to also send a message to the skeptics that there is a great goodness in all sorts of people, and, in their zeal to be “better,” they are often branded as criminals and undesirables when that couldn’t be farther from the truth. To those who still doubt, I would remind them I have a certain nine-year-old orphan as my chief witness..."

33. Don't you love it! Illegals are HUMAN BEINGS! They're gentle, family people looking for work!
They mean us no harm. They have the same values we do. And they even have courage, too, and would sacrifice their own safety and futures to help a traumatized north American child.

Bag that guy! Send 'im to a detention camp! Cut off his access to HIS family! Punish him. Rough him up. Deport him!

Later in the story...

"Cordova was taken into custody by Border Patrol agents, who were the first to respond to the call for help. He had been trying to walk into the U.S. when he came across the boy." --AP (Guardian)

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada had the decency to call the illegal a "gentleman" and the boy's "angel," and to say that he likely saved the boy's life. He describes how this gentleman tried to pull the boy's dying mother from the car, but could not--she was pinned--and stayed with the boy while she died, and afterward to comfort and protect him--gave him his jacket, built him a fire--UNTIL THEY ARRESTED HIM.

Jesus Manuel Cordova, 26, of Magdalena de Kino in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, whose family likely won't be having a happy Feliz Navidad this year. In detention, that is, IN JAIL. No money. No lawyer. No outside contact. At the mercy of "Homeland Security." He could be dead, for all his family knows--if the news story of his compassion, courage and sacrifice doesn't reach them.

Nice going, Bush! Nice going you fascist rats!

And the miracle of Jesus Manuel Cordova happening upon this helpless child in the vast wilderness of the Sonora Desert will not likely touch those hearts, or sway them against a nazi policy of removing human beings from the border area, and fencing us in, and them out. The human touch, human consciousness, humans mixing with humans, the alert eyes and compassionate hearts of humans, the natural affinities among humans, human needs, human longings, human driftings, human migration, human treks, human feet on the ground, human networking, organic human society--all banished with fences, and helicopters, and dogs, and weapons, and an attitude of cruelty and bigotry.

Well, for my part, I would as soon see our country filled Jesus Manuel Cordova's, and emptied of the cruel and the greedy. And he's in jail. And the slaughterers of a million innocent people in Iraq are not.

We're in Alice's Wonderland, my friends--everything upside down, backwards and inside out.

36. Hold on now, reason is not permitted in the illegal immigrant discussion.
You don't make any room for these arguments:
They are taking our jobs
They don't pay taxes
They are making anchor babies
They are forcing emergency rooms to close
They are getting free welfare
They come here to live off of the government
They won't speak English
They are forcing wages down
They are destroying our culture
And ten thousand more xenophobic ideas.

40. B.O. will prove he is "fair and balanced" by profiling this story
Channel surfing months ago I saw B.O. and Geraldo discussing the illegal immigrant drunk driving hit and run fatality in Virginia. B.O. took the position that had the illegal not broken the law and had not been in the country, the tragedy would not have occurred. Geraldo took the common sense analysis that it was an issue of driving under the influence, not immigration. B.O. will now trumpet illegal immigrants as a benefit to our society to prove his "fairness" on the issue. Okay it is a stretch.
