Polygamist leader gets 5 years to life
Source: Associated Press via Yahoo News

ST. GEORGE, Utah - A judge on Tuesday sentenced a polygamous-sect leader to five years to life in prison for his role in the arranged marriage of teenage cousins.

Warren Jeffs, 51, was convicted of rape as an accomplice for his role in the marriage of a 14-year-old follower and her 19-year-old cousin in 2001. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

It will be up to the Utah parole board to decide just how long he stays behind bars.

Jeffs is head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, whose members practice polygamy in arranged marriages that have often involved placing young girls with older men. Most FLDS members live in the twin communities of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz., about 350 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

3. I believe he was convicted only on two "accomplice to a rape" charge
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 05:38 PM by TechBear_Seattle
I'm not saying that he does not deserve more, but in light of what he was actually convicted of, the sentence is not all that lenient.

Correction He was convicted on two counts of "accomplice to a rape," not one.

2. Per wife? It'd have to be for life. I mean it's "'til death do us part" and all that...
Unfortunately, the 2nd one wouldn't like being stuck with a corpse all that extra time... even if it is stiff.

5. A bit more information: This sentencing is not the end of the matter
This conviction stems from an indictment in Utah. He can -- and very likely will -- face indictment and trial in Arizona on eight different counts, including including sexual conduct with minors and incest.
