Former Virginia governor running for U.S. Senate
Gilmore seeking to replace fellow Republican John Warner

By BOB LEWIS
Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va.— Former GOP Gov. Jim Gilmore announced on Monday that he will seek the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Republican John Warner.

Gilmore's announcement sets up a campaign with another former governor, Democrat Mark Warner — a clash between two men with vastly different views about government and little affection for the other.

Gilmore, 58, made the announcement in a video e-mailed to 5,000 supporters and reporters. It was also posted on YouTube and other Web sites and announced in 70,000 letters mailed to backers on Friday.

"I was governor of Virginia when our nation was struck on Sept. 11, and I helped Virginia deal with the aftermath of the attack on the Pentagon," Gilmore said in the nearly four-minute video.

4. One of the few people in the WORLD that I would put
below Mark Warner on my most disliked list. Guess I'll vote third party for this seat if there is one. Otherwise I'll leave the slot blank, they are different but at the same time they are just alike, asshole pols.

9. Mark panders to the "religious right" in VA, not just to get
elected and then revert to a decent human beings, but he really believes. He's a social RW AH. I've spoken to him directly. One thing I will say in his defense, he is not afraid to say what he believes, that is if the wind is at his back and the RW fundies are behind him.

10. Is he one of those socially conservative but economically left wing individuals?
If he's a right winger on economic issues, there is even less to be happy about.

11. I'm sure the MSM will portray Mark as a "spend and tax"
liberal. My concern is with his social conservatism and his pandering to that crowd. I think he'll be another go along to get along Dem and we have more than enough of those already. Actually I think that kind of Dem is more dangerous than a died in the wool RW Fundie nut. At least with the nut cases you can see it coming, with Dems like MW it sneaks up on you in the middle of the night.

I just ordered "The End of America" by Naomi Wolfe. I think Warner and other go along Dems are the "good Germans" of today's America.

12. The Va. conservatives had learned nothing from the elections 2 weeks ago
They went to a convention to basically freeze out Davis and pick Gilmore. HUGE infighting here between the mods and the far right wing of their party.

I have to admit that I forgot that he was Gov. on 9/11 but then everyone has tried to forget his time in office.
