Poll: In New Hampshire, Romney Rising While Rudy Drops Fast
Source: TPM and CNN

A CNN poll out of New Hampshire released today finds Mitt Romney increasing his lead and Rudy dropping fast. It finds Romney at 33%, John McCain at 18%, and Rudy in third at 16%.

That's a big swing in Romney's favor, and a dramatic slide in Rudy's fortunes. A CNN poll of the state in September found Romney and Rudy deadlocked at 25%-24%. Today's poll finds that Romney jumped eight points, while Rudy dropped the same amount.

Though the Rudy campaign is claiming that they don't need to win the early primary states, Rudy's precipitous drop in the state might explain why his campaign decided to hit the 9/11 panic button in recent days, sending out a mailing in the state trumpeting his 9/11 heroism. It also helps explain why Rudy just hit the airwaves in New Hampshire, too.

In another interesting finding in today's CNN poll, Fred Thompson has skidded badly, and is now in sixth place with four, behind libertarian Congressman Ron Paul, who has eight percent.

1. I would rather have Romney win the primary
I think his ugly sores will come out once he wins the primary.

4. Yup.
1. There is NO bigger flip flopper. C'mon, the guy said he was more liberal than Kennedy.
2. Wouldn't win his homestate
3. Though I don't think it is fair, his religion will cost him votes
4. Looks like a rich frat boy from Taxachusettes. I don't see that playing well in many purple states.
5. He is buying the nomination, and doesn't have a lot of genuine support.

12. I know it seems that way
but he wouldn't nor cannot get any free advertising. The election rules are so extremely rigid that he would never be able to get away with it. I used to sell radio ad time and many stations won't even deal with political ads because of the complicated rules.

14. They Just Call it "News" Instead of Advertising. It's That Simple
The Repiglickin' media did it constantly during the 2004 campaign.

15. Look, I have a lot of right winger, bible thumpers in my family
and they are saying they would vote for Mittens because at least he's a "christian". Don't discount him, he could be dangerous. If he can get the bible vote...............

21. That's what I thought about Bush in 2000.
When he won against McCain, I thought it was a done deal that Gore would be president.

I wouldn't put it past Americans to elect Romney in 2008.

2. With all the money that Romney has spent in that state, if he doesn't win, he's a fucking putz.
Edited on Mon Nov-19-07 05:32 PM by MADem
Incessant commercials!!!

To say nothing of the fact that Romney is a NH RESIDENT!!!!!

He spent more time at his lake home in NH than he did in MA while serving as governor! Any time there was a state emergency, he ran like hell up there and hid, leaving it to his LT GOV to stand around and do NOTHING....!!!!

opponents to use against him. They're just waiting for the perfect timing.

7. They're gonna have to drag Republicans from under their beds
to go to the polls. They have the worst slate of candidates since the Declaration of Independence.

9. It wil be Romney, no doubt about it...
Take this Massachusetts voter's word for it...this guy Romney is slick and will be big trouble for the Democratic nominee. The Morman thing will wash away as will all the flip flopping. He's got money and the backing of the corporate side of the Republican party. Think DUers, what will shift 5 million 2004 Bush voters to the Democratic ticket? Hillary? Obama? I don't think so. If Romney can get elected govenor in Massachusetts, he is trouble and we better have someone to stand up to him. I'm thinking Edwards; Smart, fiesty, neither a woman nor afro-american, has a history of fighting for individuals against corporations, capable of telling a good story, already ran and was vetted by the hostile press, will have some appeal in the south. He'll have the best chance against Romney if he can lead the nation's workers against the overpaid CEOs.

PS. Romney won over the woman the democrats put up that year.

11. I think you are dead-on
Romney is the toughest to beat. He is good looking (OK I am a heterosexual guy so I may not be the best judge of a guy's looks), he really is slick, he did win in a very blue state, etc. I still think your midwest and southern bible-thumpen' conservatives won't vote for a Morman. They will simply stay home so it will be hard to make up that deficit.

If he is able to throw Bush under a bus and talk about brining troops home I think he would beat anyone.

Romney if he runs against Hillary, more than you think.

17. Even if the Bible he thumps is a bit thicker...
...and sounds an odd note when hit.

Of course they'll vote in The Most Important Election EVAR. Having had a taste of power, they won't give it up. They'll find someone to vote for, and Romney smells like one of them.

18. Bingo! That is exactly what I am hearing. Any other time they'd
be talking about mormons and their "cult" status, but if it's Mittens against Hill, they'll vote for him. Watch.

10. Rudy's not looking that strong in the early going. His team is trying to
hold out until the super cluster primary day and try to anchor down with that.

But if Romney and Huckabee whip him in Iowa and Romney and ____ (?) beat him in New Hampshire, his stock will plummet.

I think he's a monster, so the sooner he's eliminated from their nomination race, the better, IMO. There's a vile energy to the guy. He's a bully.

19. Yeah, Rudy's kind of written off Iowa and New Hampshire
His strategy is to get the Super Duper Tuesday vote and go from there. The major risk with that is if he acquires the stink of a loser because of poor showings in Iowa and New Hampshire, he may not be able to shake it in time for Super Duper Tuesday. Republican voters don't really "do" nuance and subtlety. If someone looks like the Big Swinging Dick coming out of Iowa and New Hampshire, they'll line up behind him like a Nuremberg rally. And Rudy will be on the outside, looking in.

I'd kill to hear commentary like that instead of Tim Russert playing 'gotacha' every damn Sunday.

At this point I'm rooting for anyone but McCain.

Time will tell whether it was the right move. He does have a lot of money.

Edited on Wed Nov-21-07 11:04 AM by Dulcinea
His stance on gun control alone will cost him the South. Plus, most of the good ol' boys I know (I'm in GA) think he's a sleazebag. They'll stay home if he's the nominee, or go third party.
