Iran won't use oil as weapon if attacked: Ahmadinejad
Sun Nov 18, 2007 3:24pm EST

RIYADH (Reuters) - Iran's President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad said on Sunday his country would not use
oil as a weapon even if it is attacked by the United
States over Tehran's disputed nuclear program.

"We would never like to use oil as a weapon ... there
are other means at our disposal to respond,"
Ahmadinejad told a news conference held after a
summit of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting
Countries. His remarks were translated into English
from Persian.

Washington has not ruled out military action against
Iran, accusing it of seeking nuclear weapons. Tehran
says its nuclear program is peaceful.

Ahmadinejad said Iran would study a Gulf Arab
proposal to set up a body in a neutral country such
as Switzerland that would provide enriched uranium
to Middle East users including Iran and ensure it is
used for peaceful purposes only.

4. Because $200 Oil Would Be Devastating to Much of the Developing World
Sure, it would hurt the USA, but there are other places that are already hurting that would be hurt a lot more.

7. Maybe because Iran is dependent on gasoline imports
They have one gasoline refinery, which would likely be the first target on the first sortie.

A simple naval blockade would then prevent gasoline imports...and Iran would be a nation of bicyclists within a month or two.

3. They don't sell oil to the U.S. anyway
What else is he going to do with the stuff, drink it? Currently world above-ground oil storage facilities have oil equal to 3 years of Iranian production. He has to sell it and everyone knows it.

6. True
But if OPEC as a whole, or even the pan-arab community decides to stop production of oil the United States would be crushed.

9. Iran under cuts OPEC constantly by selling their oil at below market prices
just another reason why Iran is viewed ( in the ME ) as the black sheep of OPEC and the ME 'loose cannon' in general.

wtf/
OPEC stop selling oil? Isn't that like asking them to stop breathing oxygen?

Those royal families would loose their welfare stipends of billions of dollars !
the roayl families # in the tens of thousands btw.

Some won't be able to afford those high priced toys

5. Some how, it feels similar to saying that....
... impeachment is not on the table.

They were both stupid things to say. Mr. A ought to make it perfectly clear to Mr. B that an attack on Iran will very much involve using oil as a weapon, and that if the United States is bound and determined to do the stupidest thing ever attempted in the history of the world, well, we'll just have to see what happens.

8. How Can It be that an Oil-Producing Nation Must Ration Petrol?
Milan (AsiaNews) – Petrol rationing has sparked the largest domestic protests in Iran against President Ahmadinejad since 2005, when he took power. Having only three litres of petrol available per day in a country which is the world’s fourth exporter of petrol, not only makes life difficult for individuals, it also prevents many from earning an income. Just consider, for example, that half of the 11 million residents of Teheran get around in collective taxis, the unofficial works of tens of thousands of people. And the owners and managers of pick-ups serving as bars and of mobile workshops cannot get along now.

The rationing has thus provoked irritation among the majority of Iranians, aggravated by the fact that Ahmadinejad himself had, during his electoral campaign, promised improvements in living conditions thanks to petrol. Anger erupted in attacks on petrol stations and clashes with police.

However the unrest was practically ignored by very closely monitored news agencies, which only gave news about the backing of the Supreme Guide, Ali Khamenei, for the ration plan. People are reacting to the censorship of news by circulating ironic messages like one which says that “by order of the President, those who don’t have petrol can ask for it from the 17 million asses who voted for him.”

Iran Petrol Protests Turn Violent In Tehran

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=a69_1182961380

To many, and not only Iranians, it seems incredible that a country that is an oil exporter should be forced to ration petrol, through an updated and electronic version of cards reminiscent of the food and basic needs rations in use in European countries in World War Two. However, oil circles have been aware of the situation for some time now, not least because it is none other than one chapter of a saga unfolding across the world. The current high prices fetched by oil are largely due to a lack of refinery facilities to process crude oil.

Refineries,
it is said,
cause pollution and so nobody wants them close to their backyard,
not in Europe,
not in the United States and
not even in developing countries.

17. If attacked they will do what they need to do.
All speeches aside.

So long as Bush is rattling his sabers and getting the rattle snakes ready they will be in defensive mode.

And according to Bush, defense includes offense.

Pardon me but the shrub needs to go home and stop playing his war games.

His version kills Americans.

18. they already are using it as a weapen
who do you think is running up the prices in this last go around? the oil rich countries will bring the US to its knees through a combined effort of weakening the dollar and increasing oil prices.

it isn't that tough to figure out. look at oil prices...almost every single piece of data out there over the past week has been negative, including the fed comments about a future rate cut. what does oil do, shoots straight up over 7 or 8 bucks a barrel. we, and other countries, are likely to experience a significant slowdown in economic activity, but the price of oil is increasing. why?
