Reuters South AfricaBAMAKO, Nov 15 (Reuters) - U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said on Thursday he would use a visit to crisis-stricken Pakistan to help put the country's political process back on track as soon as possible.
Negroponte was speaking in Africa before a visit to Pakistan, where he is expected to press President Pervez Musharraf to lift a 13-day state of emergency.
"The political process in Pakistan has been derailed. Our message is that we want to work with the government and people of Pakistan and the political actors in Pakistan to put the political process back on track as soon as possible," he said.
"My schedule is not completely defined yet and, I think as far as any details about my trip, I think it would be better that I wait until I arrive in Pakistan before discussing those matters with the media," he said in Mali's capital Bamako.
