Feingold to oppose Mukasey
Source: Talking Points Memo

Josh Marshall reporting at TPM

Statement just released ...

"I will vote against the nomination of Judge Mukasey to be the next Attorney General. This was a difficult decision, as Judge Mukasey has many impressive qualities. He is intelligent and experienced and appears to understand the need to depoliticize the Department of Justice and restore its credibility and reputation." (more at link)

Sorry about that.

15. See above...
A bit of wishful thinking on my part (and posting without thinking.) I saw Feingold and thought Feinstein.

21. I had the same brain cramp. I saw her on CNN say she was voting for. ADHD reading on my part...
Plus some wishful thinking too. But with these people changing their minds and/or voting contrary to any of their past positions (not to mention common sense and international LAWS) I feel one can be forgiven for being confused.

I'm confused by their actions all the time. Even when I get the names straight.  :wow:

2. hmmmf.
"The nation's top law enforcement officer must be able to stand up to a chief executive who thinks he is above the law. The rule of law is too important to our country's history and to its future to compromise on that bedrock principle."

Take that bushitler!

8. It doesn't matter
All they need to move the nomination to the floor is one Democrat on the committee to side with the republicans, and they have 2 (Schumer and Feinstein).

This means that the nomination will leave the committee and hit the floor for an up or down vote, and then we have leiberman (in addition to Schumer and Feinstein), and who knows how many other DINOs.

Unless Schumer and Feinstein change their minds, then this guy will be the next AG who will cover for the Bush Administration. I've heard he has already agreed that he will not pursue the scandal which made the position available: Gonzales' politicizing of the DOJ and the political firings of the Attorney Generals.

The writing is on the wall.

All we can really do now is to write and call Feinstein and Schumer and put the pressure on.

11. Yea, I agree
It is how I would have expected Feingold to vote. He is a good man. I'm glad we have him in the Senate.

Feinstein is my Senator, and she is, as far as I'm concerned, a DINO, and should be voted out of office, or change her political alliance.

another way to put the pressure on. We have all these Democrats running for the nomination. what about a collective statement - we all oppose, as a group - the nomination of Mukasey. Flat-out public statement as a group. No one gets to grandstand. They do the window-dressing - Fine American, Great Qualifications, Love to have a beer with the guy BUT - and then blast, not Mukasey, but, well Mukasey.

At least it would let everyone know where they stand as a group, and what are some of our non-negotiables as Democrats ( we still have some general principles we can agree on, like torture don't we. Do we?) Yeah, I know - hell and snow balls. Still. . .

edit to add: I truly mean Russ Feingold is great. Wish he was my senator - I've got Clinton and the other one.

14. That's My Senator
And, once again, he votes with and for the people's desire. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times this guy has voted anti-dem over a twenty+ year political career here in Wisconsin, and representing us in DC. Thank you, Senator Russ.
Could our country use this man as President, or what?

If I could have my pick, THIS is who I would want to lead our country.

28. All of Mukasey's supposed "impressive qualities" are forfeit. A torturer cannot enforce the law.
Fuck Mukasey's nomination and the torturer it rode in on.

29. Not impressive at all
Outside of the torture issue, what' so impressive about him?

Mukasey is a huge supporter of unbridled executive privilege.

He has no redeeming qualities at all...unless you think having
unchecked executive power is a good thing.
