Rice fails to calm Turkish leaders over rebels' presence in Iraq

By Matthew Schofield and Bobby Caina Calvan, McClatchy Newspapers

Sat Nov 3, 4:43 PM ET

ISTANBUL — Turkish officials indicated Saturday that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had failed during two days of talks to persuade them not to send troops across the Iraqi border to attack Kurdish rebels based there.

Even before Rice's plane had left the ground here to take the secretary to Israel for Mideast peace talks there, Turkish officials briefing reporters said they'd heard nothing new during her visit and that tens of thousands of Turkish troops would remain poised at the Turkey - Iraq border.

"All options are on the table. How, when and whether or not to use these instruments is a matter of strategy for us," Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan told a news conference.

That means it likely falls to President Bush to persuade Turkey to hold back from military action when he meets Monday in Washington with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

2. Failure in Turkey. Failure in Iraq. Failure in Pakistan. The only thing bushco isn't failing at is
causing pure, unadulterated mayhem in the mideast. But that's what the neocon/BFEE/illuminati plan is anyway, right?

4. Nobody believes anything
she says anymore. But that's O.K. I hope she and the rest of them keep pouring on.A year ago Turkey might have responded in line with U.S.requests,obviously now they're not.Another six months they'll get to the point where they just tell her to piss off, that they don't want to hear the bullshit anymore. That's what I'm looking forward to.

5. This is hilarious.
"That means it likely falls to President Bush to persuade Turkey to hold back from military action when he meets Monday in Washington with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan".

Yeah, our petulant frat boy, who in all likelihood can't find Turkey on a map, is going to "jawbone" the Turks into holding back on any incursion into Iraq. Yeah, that'll work!

No one listens to Bush or anyone in his administration any more. World leaders have lost all respect (if indeed there ever was any) for the Bush-led U.S. government. The only thing that acts as a deterrent to anyone is U.S. military might and even that is highly suspect since Bush has broken it in his ill-advised middle-east crusade.

In other words, everything is completely out of control and there is every reason to worry. Bush is on the job. :scared:

6. Let's look at the bright side.
With all this diplomatic failure and unrest in the mid-east, the price of oil is rising. How many DUER's are in Oil Futures? A peaceful mid-east would collapse the price of oil to about $1.75 a gal. Would investing in oil market be a conflict of interest for Congress? It's OK for the Executive Branch to invest, isn't it?

7. the most common result from BushCo: FAILURE
which makes perfect sense, because the neocons are all failures and losers, so they're just doing what they do best.

9. She's very ineffective, to put it mildly.
In past administrations you would always hear that envoys were being sent here or there for various reasons; that's something we don't hear much these days. But I guess when diplomacy is largely ignored there's no point in sending diplomats anywhere.

Our next SOS will inherit a mess. There is so much riding on the next election - we have to get it right.

13. I wonder how Iran factors into this?
If Turkey invades Iraq, to go after Kurdish separatists, what will Iran do? Bush might welcome an excuse to pit U.S. troops against Iranian troops, should this Kurdish situation escalate.

It could get very strange, with the U.S. supporting Kurdish separatists against Iran, while supporting Turkey against their Kurdish separatists. I doubt it will be very coherent.
