Thompson Adviser Has Criminal Past

By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, November 4, 2007; Page A01

Republican presidential candidate Fred D. Thompson has been crisscrossing the country since early this summer on a private jet lent to him by a businessman and close adviser who has a criminal record for drug dealing.

Thompson selected the businessman, Philip Martin, to raise seed money for his White House bid. Martin is one of four campaign co-chairmen and the head of a group called the "first day founders." Campaign aides jokingly began to refer to Martin, who has been friends with Thompson since the early 1990s, as the head of "Thompson's Airforce."

3. Only 11 pounds of marijuana, violation of parole, bookmaking and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
Sounds like a Bush Pioneer to me!

Or a candidate for 3 strikes, perhaps. . .

7. So what is the big deal?
The right is getting more and more drug tolerant ever since Rush was excused for his habit. I only hope he starts pushing for the legalization of Marijuana.

8. Does *every* Republican candidate have criminals as advisers?
I have never seen such a collection of losers, crooks, and perverts as we now see leading the "Grand" (ha!) Old Party. Their candidates constantly associate with known criminals - heck, some of them are known criminals!

Disgusting.

11. They have to keep breaking those outdated laws.....
to keep us safe and free. They're sacrificing their reputations for the good of our country, for the safety and well being of all Americans. They are the true patriots :patriot: of our time, never thinking of themselves.

Yeah, that's :sarcasm:

Well, that's what THEY'D tell you anyway. In reality yes, they ARE all crooks, perverts and con-men but they spin it otherwise. If the media lets them get away with it (and they usually do).

Back in the good old days the Dem's were the ones with Mob connections. But, they were out front about it. These religious right types are all for family values. But, what family

13. Good, I like it ...
Repug hypocrisy aside, I think the more drug users and dealers in government, the better. Legalize drugs, free a bunch of drug-convicted folks from prison. End the war on drugs. Sounds good to me.

This "shady" side began with Ronald Reagan's friendship with Alfred Bloomingdale and Frank Sinatra and their attorney, Sidney Korshak, who also represented the West Coast families. People yawned. People still do. The Mafia has become big business in this country. No longer the seamy gangsters in the dark alleys. They are in the board rooms now.

It isn't restricted to Republicans. Rather than start a flame war I will leave it at that. But I will say, again, people really need to start looking at the money trail instead of just listening to the spin machines.

Personally I would rather have one of Shirley MacLaine's friends in the White House. But that won't happen. Of course, who knows who Shirley MacLaine is friends with. She was, after all, friends with Frank Sinatra. And so it goes.

As for Philip Martin, well, the Republicans who support Fred Thompson will probably point out that while he did the crime, he did the time, although I'm not sure he did, and then point out that Clinton pardoned Mark Rich who never did any time, not that you are supposed to do time over civil violations which everyone always overlooks although of course Rudy Giuliani kept demanding criminal charges be filed which is why Clinton really pardoned Mark Rich, and Democrats believe they're above the law and Republicans at least are capable of reforming themselves and becoming productive members of society. You are dealing with very delusional people. You are dealing with Nazis.

One wonders what might have happened if we hadn't prevailed over Nazi Germany. Who might have succeeded Hitler? We may find out.

18. Gee another person guilty FOREVER, for a crime he
committed over 20 years ago? Everyone that has replied so far can buy their new jack boots on ebay. Think motherfuckers, think. How long should he be a non-person for these non-violent vice crimes? How long will you lovely enlightened people punish him. You're acting like the freepers you hate so much. You should all be ashamed.

19. NO, this is NOT about his 1979 GUILTY plea for Drug Trafficking, or his "No Contest" (Guilty) plea..
...for "...multiple counts of felony bookmaking, cocaine trafficking and conspiracy..." in 1983, nether of which did he serve any time in Prison, getting Probation instead. Or even the shell companies which, as ABC News says he "...started and folded dozens of businesses in the 1990s. More recently, former investors have been chasing millions they say they are owed by Martin's former companies..."

Thompson Defends Fundraiser With Criminal Record

Candidate Says He Wishes Adviser Had Told Him of Old Arrests Earlier

By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, November 5, 2007; Page A04

...The Washington Post reported yesterday that Martin entered a plea of guilty to the sale of 11 pounds of marijuana in 1979; the court withheld judgment pending completion of his probation, Florida court records showed. He was charged in 1983 with violating his probation and with multiple counts of felony bookmaking, cocaine trafficking and conspiracy. He pleaded no contest to the cocaine-trafficking and conspiracy charges, which stemmed from a plan to sell $30,000 worth of the drug, and was continued on probation....

'Longtime Friend,' Thompson Adviser Has Rap Sheet

Records Show Philip J. Martin Sold Drugs, Took Bets and Stole Liquor Before Working on Pal Fred Thompson's Presidential Campaign

By BRIAN ROSS, ASA ESLOCKER and JUSTIN ROOD

Nov. 4, 2007

Since March, Philip J. Martin has traveled around the country on behalf of GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson, flying the former senator to events and working to raise more than $6 million for Thompson's campaign.

In the 30 years prior, Martin raised hell, according to public records and numerous lawsuits reviewed by ABC News, as a bookie, drug dealer and accused double-dealer.

Police files show Martin was convicted of or pleaded guilty to multiple felonies in the 1970s and 80s and started and folded dozens of businesses in the 1990s. More recently, former investors have been chasing millions they say they are owed by Martin's former companies....

And yet, He still has an extra Corporate Jet to lend good 'ol Fred. Yeah, this Poor, un-repentant, "Non-Violent vice crime" FELON never "hurt" anyone. :banghead: :eyes:

No, it's not for any ONE of those things, it's for ALL of those things that show him to be a major scumbag and probably an "Organized Crime" participant, who I'm sure if further investigated, it will be found to still be breaking multiple laws daily while helping your buddy Fred.

Btw, check out the newly posted video, at the ABC News link, of the favors ol' Fred did for Tricky Dick Nixon back during the Watergate investigations.
