As of Thursday, Jan. 8, 485 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites), according to the Defense Department. Of those, 333 died as a result of hostile action and 152 died of non-hostile causes, the department said. snip

2. Yup, the 485 doesn't include the helicopter crash from today
or the fatality from the mortar attack yesterday.

3. The mortar attack is probably in there
The Lunaville fatality count has been two higher than the count given by the Department of Defense for some time now. I've tried to figure out why that is, and my guess is that there are a couple of people who contracted some illness in Iraq, but were evacuated stateside and died here.

Anyway, that's my guess, because if you take the 485 + 9 from today's helicopter attack, that's 494, which gets us to two below Lunaville.

4. something's wrong with the numbers
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 08:12 PM by Hamlette
333 died from hostile action, 152 died from non-hostile causes(whatever that is) or about 31.3% died from non hostile causes

2445 injured in hostile action, 383 injured in non hostile causes, or 13.5% injured from non hostile causes.

How can that be? Why so many more deaths than injuries from "non hostile causes"? Why are they dying?
