LA fire started by boy with matches 10 minutes ago

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - A boy playing with matches started a fire in north Los Angeles County that consumed more than 38,000 acres and destroyed 21 homes last week, authorities said Tuesday.

The boy, whose name and age were not released, was interviewed a day after the Buckweed Fire was sparked Oct. 21, said sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht.

"He admitted to playing with matches and accidentally starting the fire," said Hecht said in a statement.

The boy was released to his parents, and the case will be be presented to the district attorney's office, Hecht said.

5. If the kid is just small boy, then the parents should be punished for dereliction
I'm sick of this bullshit with derelict parents who don't fulfill their responsibilities.

6. I cut them some slack
I got into all kinds of things when I was a kid and my mother kept an eagle eye on me most of the time. If you gave me thirty seconds, I was into stuff.
They soon will be hit with lawsuits right and left as it is. The whole situation is sad.

15. Every kid has played with matches at some point.
I know I did. I'm sure the kid didn't have the intention of starting a major inferno. It was his bad luck that he happens to be a kid and his curiosity got the better of him. Who hasn't played with matches before?

17. Exactly, let's not be ridiculous here
What are they going to do to the kid? Beat him? Toss him in the pokey?

Punish the parents? No. Do we punish the parents of child murderers? NO.

This is just damn bad luck all around.

18. I like your reply.
There has been enough suffering for everyone because of the fires. What good could possibly come from having a child or parents pay a price for a kids curiousity and carelessness.

19. IMO it depends on the history of the child with such "fire" starting

I knew of a case where a little boy tried to burn the school down.

He went into the empty teacher's lounge and turned on the stove.

When his parent was called to come to the school she mentioned that he was always trying to start fires.

When asked had she ever mentioned it to the doctor, school etc. she said that she never thought to do that ~~~~~

The Fire Department had a program and he (a tiny little 2nd grader) was able to do well with the training of the Fire Department and the school counselor.
