Police investigate extortion attempt against state lawmaker

Rep. Richard Curtis was in Spokane last week attending a retreat with other republican lawmakers to discuss the upcoming legislative session.

Detectives tell KREM 2 News at some point Thursday Curtis had a sexual encounter with a man, who police have not identified. A Spokane Police Dept. spokesperson says Curtis and the man were spotted at several locations across the city that evening.

The next day, someone filed a police report alleging that Curtis was being extorted.

Curtis, a republican, represents the 18th District in Southwestern Washington. According to his online biography, Curtis is a New Mexico native who moved to Washington eleven years ago.

Yup. This conservative REPUBLICAN is being extorted because he was apparently engaging in a clandestine sexual encounter with another man. One would think there would be partners aplenty at a GOP retreat; maybe they are all so far into the closet that it would never occur to them to ask each other for sex?

Another repugnant caught in a sexual scandal? In a couple of weeks he will start denying the claims of having a sexual encounter with a man. I just don't see how people can look at this repugnant party and say, with a straight face, that they represent "moral party". Maybe he can find Ted Haggert (sp?) and not have to worry about extortion.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A Republican state legislator from southwest Washington had sex with a man he met at an erotic video store and then was the target of an extortion attempt, according to police documents released Tuesday.

State Rep. Richard Curtis, R-La Center, who on Monday vehemently denied he was gay, was the victim of the reported extortion attempt by Cody Castagna, a man he brought to the posh Davenport Tower hotel on Oct. 26, according to search warrant documents.

Castagna told police that Curtis agreed to pay him $1,000 for sex and also said Curtis purchased two gay pornographic films from the hotel for them to watch in his room.

Numerous efforts to reach Curtis on Tuesday were not immediately successful.

It needs to be treated as that. This outing business is definitely ridiculous. There is certainly nothing "perverted" in what he did. A lot of people do that. He may be a hypocrite but who isnt. I think as liberals, we need to be a little more compassionate and a little less judgemental. Individuals that are stuck between two entirely opposing worlds are the most conflicted. He must be one of those people. We need to feel sorry for him.

Curtis is married and has children, according to his legislative Web site. Elected to the state House of Representatives in 2004, he has voted against gay rights legislation.

State Republican leaders have declined comment on the case.
