Ryan loses appeal

By Michael Higgins and Jeff Coen | Tribune staff reporters
10:35 AM CDT, October 25, 2007

Former Gov. George Ryan may soon be reporting to
federal prison after an appellate court refused
today to reconsider an August ruling that affirmed
his sweeping convictions for public corruption and
fraud.

The full U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals decided
not to review the work of a three-judge panel that
voted 2-1 to uphold Ryan's convictions despite a
series of juror controversies at the end of his
historic six-month trial last year.

A majority of the nine judges who took up the
matter issued a one-paragraph denial of the Aug.
28 motion without comment.

"A vote on whether to grant rehearing en banc was
requested, and a majority of the judges in regular
active service have voted to deny the petition,"
the order stated.

1. So Fitz got him.
From what I've heard, that is a correct and just result.

2. Sounds like a fair ruling. But I'll remember him for his death penalty courage.
I don't think a Dem governor could have pulled that off.

4. a man with blood on his hands closing the death chamber. big deal
sorry, i just have to disabuse people of the notion that he acted out of courage. he watched a mini van full of children go up in flames thanks to someone who paid a bribe or a truckers license. he sold his office and people died. he covered his own ass. i grant he wasn't likely to pay for that particular crime. but that is what he is going to prison for. he should have had to pay. but he is too rich and too white.
may he rot in prison. i hate that fucker.

Ex-Gov. Ryan ordered to prison by Nov. 7

By MIKE ROBINSON, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 38 minutes ago

CHICAGO - Former Gov. George Ryan was ordered Friday
to start serving a 6 1/2-year prison sentence in less than
two weeks, but his lawyers held out hope they could keep
him out of prison pending a U.S. Supreme Court appeal.

U.S. District Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer set a Nov. 7
surrender date for Ryan and co-defendant Larry Warner
to report to prison.

Ryan's lawyers will ask the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals to extend his bond. Ryan has been free on bail
since he was convicted in April 2006 of steering state
contracts to friends, using tax dollars to run his
campaigns and covering up drivers license bribery.
