Turk troops repulse rebel attack -security officials
25 Oct 2007 06:41:14 GMT

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Turkish forces
deploying tanks and artillery repulsed an attack by up to
40 Kurdish militants on a military post near the Iraqi
border, security officials said on Thursday.

The attack late on Wednesday targeted Turkish gendarmes,
or paramilitary police, in the mountainous Hakkari province,
the officials said.

After heavy clashes, the guerrillas withdrew back into
northern Iraq, taking with them an unknown number of dead
and wounded, the officials said.

1. Hey ho, way to go, bushco.
Administration schmadnidistration. The only thing you'll be recorded in history as having done successfully is to kill your way to security and lead by fear.

2. Turkey Warns of Wider Operation Against PKK in Iraq (Update2)
Turkey Warns of Wider Operation Against PKK in Iraq (Update2)

By Mark Bentley

Oct. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Turkey warned of a wider military assault on Kurdish militants in northern Iraq and called on the U.S. to join the fight against the group.

Turkey won't stand by after Iraq allowed members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, to use bases on Iraqi territory for attacks that left 42 Turkish soldiers and civilians dead this month, President Abdullah Gul said today in Ankara.

``Turkey's patience has run out, despite our respect for Iraq's territorial integrity'' Gul told a meeting of the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation.

The U.S. has cautioned Turkey against a full-scale military operation, while urging Iraq to stop PKK fighters from crossing the border into Turkey. The Bush administration has expressed concern that a major attack will destabilize the Kurdish- controlled region, the calmest part of Iraq.

As a ``strategic ally'' the U.S. government is obliged to help Turkey battle PKK fighters, just as Turkey sent troops to help the U.S. combat terrorism in Afghanistan, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in televised comments in Bucharest today. He didn't provide further details.

Turkey's military, the second-largest in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, strafed PKK positions along the border yesterday using F-16 jet fighters and helicopters. The army has about 80,000 soldiers stationed in a mountainous area near northern Iraq, a region with partial autonomy from the central government in Baghdad.

3. Turkey: US will not stop Iraq incursion
Turkey: US will not stop Iraq incursion By SELCAN HACAOGLU, Associated Press Writer
36 minutes ago

ANKARA, Turkey - Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that U.S. objections would not stop Turkey from crossing into Iraq to eliminate Kurdish rebels. The Turkish military said it had killed more than 30 insurgents who were poised to launch an attack on the border.

President Abdullah Gul said Turkey is running out of patience with the Kurdish separatist attacks. A steady stream of U.S.-made Turkish fighter jets roared into the skies near the Iraqi border, loaded with bombs.

The Turkish military said it had spotted a "group of terrorists" near a military outpost in the province of Semdinli close to the border with Iraq on Tuesday and fired on them with tanks, artillery and other heavy weaponry. It said the group had been preparing for an attack.

In a statement posted on its Web site, the military said the troops kept firing on the group as they escaped toward the Iraqi territory. The report increased the official number of rebels killed since Sunday to at least 64.
