Turkey Warns of Wider Operation Against PKK in Iraq (Update2)
By Mark Bentley
Oct. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Turkey warned of a wider military assault on Kurdish militants in northern Iraq and called on the U.S. to join the fight against the group.
Turkey won't stand by after Iraq allowed members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, to use bases on Iraqi territory for attacks that left 42 Turkish soldiers and civilians dead this month, President Abdullah Gul said today in Ankara.
``Turkey's patience has run out, despite our respect for Iraq's territorial integrity'' Gul told a meeting of the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation.
The U.S. has cautioned Turkey against a full-scale military operation, while urging Iraq to stop PKK fighters from crossing the border into Turkey. The Bush administration has expressed concern that a major attack will destabilize the Kurdish- controlled region, the calmest part of Iraq.
As a ``strategic ally'' the U.S. government is obliged to help Turkey battle PKK fighters, just as Turkey sent troops to help the U.S. combat terrorism in Afghanistan, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in televised comments in Bucharest today. He didn't provide further details.
Turkey's military, the second-largest in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, strafed PKK positions along the border yesterday using F-16 jet fighters and helicopters. The army has about 80,000 soldiers stationed in a mountainous area near northern Iraq, a region with partial autonomy from the central government in Baghdad.
