(French President) Sarkozy and wife agree to split
Source: BBC

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to separate from his wife of 11 years, Cecilia, the presidential office says.

The separation is "by mutual consent", the Elysee Palace statement said.

Speculation had recently been mounting that the couple were to split, with the media often remarking on Ms Sarkozy's absence from her husband's side.

Cecilia Sarkozy has had a successful career as a model and parliamentary aide and has said that she never wanted to be a traditional first lady.

2. Sarkozy came to power with the votes of the more overtly Catholic sections ...
... of the French population.

How very convenient of he and his wife to postpone their separation - which might have been a vote loser - until after his election ....

6. Announced the very day of the first major challenge to Sarko's power
The massive transit strike in response to pension reform. The split is the top story at liberation.fr but not lemonde.fr.

French president, wife have divorced

By ANGELA CHARLTON, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 3 minutes ago

PARIS - President Nicolas Sarkozy and his elegant
but enigmatic wife, Cecilia, have divorced after
months of questions about their relationship, a
first for France that struck a deep, personal blow
to his young presidency.

Their lawyer, Michele Cahen, told The Associated
Press on Thursday that the two were heard Monday
by a judge who granted their divorce after nearly
11 years of marriage. She would not say when the
divorce proceedings had begun.

In a 15-word statement, Sarkozy's office said the
two were separating by mutual consent and would
not comment further. Sarkozy's spokesman said
separation meant divorce.

The announcement raised questions about how the
couple could secure a divorce so quickly, which
no one in the president's office would answer.

11. No, he's more the law-and-order Nixonite type.
"Family values" is a centerpiece of US political discourse, but not French.

12. The light's on, but nobody's home
I'm not being sexist. Honest. But Cecilia Sarkozy strikes me as a loose cannon. Outside of her commendable work in freeing a Palestinean doctor and some nurses jailed by Libya for "intentionally" infecting children with HIV, she's been nothing but a shallow showboater.

She has the intellect of Margaret Trudeau and the tact of Martha Mitchell. I have a feeling France will be better off without her as First Lady.
