Official: Deputy fatally shot himself
Updated 5h 6m ago

CRANDON, Wis. (AP) — An off-duty sheriff's deputy who killed six people apparently shot himself three times, with the last shot hitting him in the right side of the head, the state attorney general said Tuesday.

......

The lone survivor was scheduled for surgery Tuesday afternoon.

Peterson died near a friend's home in Argonne.

Van Hollen said Peterson went to Jordanne Murray's home about 2 a.m. and argued with her after accusing her of dating someone else. Murray demanded Peterson leave, and he did, only to return with an AR-15 rifle.

"He didn't speak, he simply opened fire," Van Hollen said.
...........

Lianna Thomas, 18, was found in a closet, and Katrina McCorkle, 18, was just outside it. Both had apparently been trying to hide, Van Hollen said.

1. But I thought AR-15's are pretty much never used in crimes
As more of these high performance military weapons are available, more crimes will occur with them. Soon all police will have to have these guns since the AWB was reversed.

4. The ar-15 is not a military weapon.
its a civilian semi-automatic rifle. But you knew that, that or you simply ignored the hundreds of times its been said.

It just LOOKS like an m-16. Now thats truly scary :eyes:

Do you believe these poor folks would be less dead if it looked like a hunting rifle?

"Soon all police will have to have these guns since the AWB was reversed."

Your some piece of work Bill. The awb wasn't reversed. It sunset, as it was WRITTEN to do. And police having semi-automatic rifles isn't some new and ground breaking thing.

Yes, people suddenly being able to LEGALLY put folding stocks stocks, pistol grips, and OMG the dreaded bayonette lug on thier civilian semi-automatic rifles is surely going to cause the blood to run in the streets. :sarcasm:

Oh, and I'm sure this is just a minor detail in the minds of some, but wasn't this the same "police" you refer to that killed those poor folks?

6. It's not a hunting rifle either. It's dressed up to give it that "military" look
that appeals to,,, some folks.

Fill me in though,, same caliber bullet and muzzle specs?

I believe the salient point is that this is an effective weapon for killing people in a non-combat environment.

Of course, before this one outing, the deputy had only used it on the target range so it was 99% ok.:sarcasm:

7. And when a gun is toted for "self defense"....
It's only a matter of who shoots first; the murderer or the "law-abiding" gun toter. The main element here was SURPRISE. Even if every one of those kids had also had a gun, it wouldn't have make one bit of difference.

11. Interestingly
the article does not state if the weapon was his own or issued by the Sheriff's Department. Perhaps he had used in his line of work also.

I have seen Officers pull these rifles from the trunks of their cars and run into crowded public areas for up close confrontations where a hand gun would be more appropriate, at close range and confined spaces the AR-15 is not as effective as the hand gun.

Regardless, the gun used is no more an issue than the brand of keyboard I use is when I make a spelling error.

13. It's the most popular centerfire target rifle in America...
Edited on Wed Oct-10-07 10:14 AM by benEzra
and the most popular law enforcement carbine as well, going back a decade or so.

Ballistics-wise, it happens to be the least powerful of common centerfire rifles (it's .22 caliber, after all). The .223/5.56x45mm variants (most common) can be used for hunting small game up to coyote sized--groundhogs, prarie dogs, etc.--but are too underpowered to legally hunt deer with. You can get AR's in good hunting calibers, though (6.8mm, .243 WSSM, .308 Winchester. .300 RSAUM, etc.), making them suitable for deer and elk hunting.

Nominal ballistics for a 16" barreled civilian AR-15 are a 55-grain bullet at around 3100-3200 feet per second, a 62 grain bullet at 2900-3000 fps, or 77 grain bullets at around 2800, IIRC. Comparable velocity and trajectory to a .243 Winchester, but with lighter bullets.

Energy figures:

Weapon.......................................Kinetic Energy

AR-15 (.223 Remington/5.56x45mm)................1,275 ft-lb
7.62x39mm (SKS, civilian AK)....................1,495 ft-lb
.30-30 Winchester...............................1,902 ft-lb
.243 Winchester.................................1,946 ft-lb
.308 Winchester.................................2,670 ft-lb
.270 Winchester.................................2,702 ft-lb
.50 Beowulf.....................................2,878 ft-lb
.30-06 (most popular deer rifle)................2,900 ft-lb
.444 Marlin.....................................2,942 ft-lb
.300 Remington Ultra Mag........................3,682 ft-lb
.375 Holland & Holland..........................4,230 ft-lb
.338 Lapua......................................4,830 ft-lb
.375 Remington Ultra Mag........................5,073 ft-lb
.416 Remington Magnum...........................5,115 ft-lb
.408 CheyTac....................................8,298 ft-lb
.416 Barrett....................................9,380 ft-lb
.585 Nyati.....................................10,130 ft-lb
.700 Nitro Express.............................11,150 ft-lb
.50 BMG........................................13,971 ft-lb

It's certainly adequate for police use and civilian target/defensive use, but it's no superweapon. Don't forget that the low-powered .223/5.56 cartridge was chosen for light weight and for reduced recoil in lightweight machineguns, not for lethality (the .308 Winchester/7.62x51mm it replaced was more lethal, but heavier and recoils worse).

17. Thats your opinion, and your entitled to it...
Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 04:35 PM by beevul
no matter how ridiculous it is.

Exactly how do YOU define a hunting weapon hmm?

So what if it appeals to "some folks"? Do you see that as a huge problem? If so, why?

And so what if it fires the same .223 round as MANY rifles do?

"I believe the salient point is that this is an effective weapon for killing people in a non-combat environment."

Ok then. How about just stating, within the context of what YOU would allow civilians to own and possess, what would NOT be an "effective weapon for killing people in a non-combat environment"? An automobile could serve the same purpose just as effectively. So could a great many other things.

Really, the bottom line in response to any of the points you might think you have made is :

So what?

You aren't a member of the "only law enforcement and military should have guns" club, are you?

14. He used a Fully Auto M-16 A-4 carbine His DUTY weapon
He fired a 30 round magazine then changed magazines and emptied another one at the fist police car on the scene and got away

9 HOURS LATER He committed russian roulette with his 40 cal Glock semi auto pistol

This piece of thrash fired 3 shots to get the job done

SWAT also shot the perp in the arm from 200 yards with a single 7.62X51 (.308) Then the "Deputy" decided to end it all.

19. That leaves the total NFA weapon illegal use count
at 1..By another police officer.

Using an m4 or any weapon at that range in a confined space would have the same outcome.

22. A class 3 FFL
and a sear assembly, five or six grand and your life on display to fed, (but whose isn't anymore?) for an over rated way to spray quarters.

My post ban HBAR Colt AR 15 does just fine with iron sights, and the friends already get pissed at me for clearing the field of targets before they can scope in.

Fully auto is seldom the most effective way to use small arms in any situation, but it does scare the shit out of the down range recipient, and it gives a false sense of security to the trigger puller. Someone has to reload those magazines.

Some of the pictures from the Liberian civil war would be funny if weren't an actual killing situation. Two Paris Island graduates could have stood their ground in the middle of the street with 180 rounds and cleared the field of both sides with little difficulty or danger.

Shear number of bullets fired is a poor substitute for a well trained marksman who is fully confident in his ability, equipment, and mission's just purpose.

I am a supporter of the second, but if we can't let everyone have a RPG, then I feel a little safer knowing I will most likely only have to defend myself against the same as I have if that time were to come.

10. Less than 5% of all Gun crimes involve Rifles and Shotguns
95% involve Pistols. No one ever said these weapons are NOT used in crime, but that the level is way below Pistols. If you add murders from Knives and "Blunt Instruments", rifles AND shotguns fell below EITHER since the mid-1990s, prior to the mid-1990s the number of murders involving "Blunt Instruments" and knives had to be combined to beat out "Rifles and Shotguns" but since the mid-1990s that is no longer the case.

P.S. The FBI only counts Rifles and Shotguns, and does NOT break that number down into what type of Rifle. Thus Asssult Rifles (including look alike semi-automatic versions) are included in the 5% but that 5% also includes Deer Rifles, 22s and any other rifle.

Either that sniper sucks, or someone isn't telling the truth.

How do you shoot yourself TWICE under the chin, and then shoot yourself in the side of the head a THIRD time?

Oh, and somewhere in there you were shot in the bicep with a sniper rifle!

Think about that - he had an AR-15 - an assault rifle. How do you shoot yourself with a rifle with one hand?

Sounds fishy.

21. and where does it say in the article that he shot himself with the AR-15?
Oh, wait. It doesn't say that. You just assumed it.

Here are the facts, which maybe will change your opinion:

He shot the victims in the house with the AR-15. He left. He then was wounded by a sniper, at which time he took his Glock handgun and shot himself.

Its all right here: http://edition.cnn.com/2007/US/10/10/wisconsin.shooting/index.html

Tyler Peterson showed up at Mike Kegley's door at 7:30 Sunday morning as the rest of Crandon awoke to the grisly news of a mass slaying.

Kegley's wife, Mary, discreetly called 911. She and her son, a lifelong friend of Peterson's, coaxed the work-issued assault rifle he had proudly shown off just days earlier from his hand. He wouldn't part with his police-issued pistol, though.

About an hour later, Kegley estimated, Peterson returned to the house. He said he had met with his mom and grandmother and that his mom spoke softly to him.

The Kegleys again quietly called 911.

Kegley owns a construction and roofing company housed on his property. Three of his workers were at the house, and as Peterson lingered, they called 911 "as many as 20 times," Kegley said.

Sometime around 10:30 a.m. when there was still no apparent sign of police, Mike Kegley left the house to "find out where the hell they were," he said.

At some point, Peterson climbed into the back of his pickup truck and went to sleep.

Kegley's workers again called 911. Still no law enforcement officers tried to apprehend him.

Kegley said his workers estimated Peterson slept for about 45 minutes and then was awakened by a call from Stenz, the district attorney.

Stenz said the two talked for five to 10 minutes about a possible surrender. Stenz wouldn't discuss specifics, but said he anticipated talking to Peterson again.

After the call, around 2 p.m. by Kegley's estimation, Peterson walked off toward the woods. He didn't say anything to Kegley's son or any of the workers nearby, Kegley said.

He got about 50 yards from the house and gunfire erupted.
