Leak Severed a Link to Al-Qaeda's Secrets (by White House)
Edited on Tue Oct-09-07 01:11 AM by RamboLiberal
Source: Washington Post

A small private intelligence company that monitors Islamic terrorist groups obtained a new Osama bin Laden video ahead of its official release last month, and around 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, it notified the Bush administration of its secret acquisition. It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release.

Within 20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide.

The founder of the company, the SITE Intelligence Group, says this premature disclosure tipped al-Qaeda to a security breach and destroyed a years-long surveillance operation that the company has used to intercept and pass along secret messages, videos and advance warnings of suicide bombings from the terrorist group's communications network.

"Techniques that took years to develop are now ineffective and worthless," said Rita Katz, the firm's 44-year-old founder, who has garnered wide attention by publicizing statements and videos from extremist chat rooms and Web sites, while attracting controversy over the secrecy of SITE's methodology. Her firm provides intelligence about terrorist groups to a wide range of paying clients, including private firms and military and intelligence agencies from the United States and several other countries.

-----

By midafternoon, several television news networks reported obtaining copies of the transcript. A copy posted around 3 p.m. on Fox News's Web site referred to SITE and included page markers identical to those used by the group. "This confirms that the U.S. government was responsible for the leak of this document," Katz wrote in an e-mail to Leiter at 5 p.m.

Attytood: Betrayal: How Bush's Iraq politics ruined our spying on bin Laden

Buzzflash has a different take
Bizarre, Bizarre Bushevik Relationship with an "Anti-Terrorist" Organization Called "SITE" That We've Been Meaning to Write a News Analysis About. Okay, This Group Called "SITE" is Allegedly Finding Stuff Out About Al-Qaeda Before the Bush Administration, Such as the Alleged Latest Osama Tape with the Photo-Shopped Beard. Now, the Woman Who Runs It -- Who Allegedly is Paid a Large Consulting Fee by The White House -- is Accusing the Bush Administration of Destroying Her "Sources" for Finding Out Things About the "Terrorists" That the Bush Administration Doesn't Know.

So, She Goes to the Washington Post Complaining that the Bush Administration is Undercutting the War on Terrorism, In Essence, by Leaking the Alleged Osama Tape Too Early After She Sent it To Them. Our Question is Why is this Small Private Organization Called "SITE" Allegedly Beating Our Intelligence Agencies to Information About Osama? Why Isn't the CIA The WH Source? Uh, This is Mind Boggling. And She Regularly Appears to be Supplying the Busheviks with "Secret" Information.

This is THE Story that the WP Should be Investigating, Not Her Strange Whining to Them. What the Heck is "SITE" Doing Being Several Steps Ahead of the Combined Department of Homeland Security Intelligence Operation? Or are They Just a WH Propaganda Plant? A Very Strange Story Indeed. 10/9

73. Thanks for the MEMRI
SITE - http://www.wakeupfromyourslumber.com/node/2971|DEBKAfile> - MEMRI

As we have known for some time now, MEMRI, short for the Middle East Media Research Institute, specializes in disinformation by distorting translations of film and print media stories originating in Arabic, Iranian and Turkish media. In essence, what MEMRI does is change the context of news stories by way of mistranslation and excision. Call it MEMRI loss, the deliberate mangling of media. MEMRI did this to Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by turning a speech he delivered in 2005 into a racist and genocidal screed. MEMRI accomplished this through mistranslation. Not a day passes now we do not witness corporate media claims Ahmadinejad wants to wipe Israel off the map. In fact, Ahmadinejad said the “regime that is occupying Qods must be eliminated from the pages of history.” He did not say Israel must be wiped off the map. But this engineered lie is repeated constantly by the corporate media and to such a degree it is now accepted as fact.

84. Very strange story indeed
SITE and an Israeli intelligence front operation in Washington, MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute), are closely linked.
.
MEMRI has been responsible for mis-translating several speeches made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.
.
SITE's director is Rita Katz, an Iraq-born Jew who moved to Israel after her father was executed by Saddam Hussein's government for spying for the Mossad.
.
She emigrated to the United States from Israel in 1997.
.
Katz worked for the US Treasury Department in its pursuit of Muslim charity funds in the United States in Operation Green Quest and as a consultant for the FBI.
.
The main coordinator for Green Quest was the then-head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, Michael Chertoff.

Leak severs link to al-Qaeda’s secrets
Firm says Bush administration’s handling of video ruined its spying efforts

Leaked videos can be leaked as easily as genuine ones. The fact that the administration leaked a video does nothing to imply that it is genuine. Quite the opposite, in our experience. The faker something is, the more likely it will be leaked. See: Rather-gate.

This private company may or may not have obtained a genuine tape from genuine channels. We don't have enough information to verify that or not. However, the sources accuse the Bush administration of disregarding a promise to keep the video's existence a secret. That's the story.

I want it on the big three networks and CNN and FOX as well as on Countdown, where I'm pretty sure it will appear. And I want key Senators as well as the presidential candidates to say something in the media. There is no excuse for compromising national security. None.

Fielding's name around whether trick or fact? Strange. Unless he's doing more on the spy side in addition to providing legal counsel, why would he be involved in taking a call from SITE? Is he in on the ME spy operation? How many independent U.S. spy companies are there? It would seem that this WH would want control on spying? Sounds as though the spying is electronic? The WH allows independent electronic spying that is completely (or somewhat) out of their control? What does SITE do with all their information - feed it to the WH, but without leaks ... until now? Why go to the press?

Is this a CIA, DIA, ICE, State Dept out-sourced company?

Smelly.

Edited on Tue Oct-09-07 11:43 AM by EVDebs
By trying to impress visitors,

(paperback) "To impress cleared visitors, NSA analysts occasionally play audiotapes of Bin Laden talking to his mother over an INMARSAT connection."

If they're doing this on a regular basis, and guys like Sen Shelby leak NSA info to CNN and Fox Snooze, what is the general public left to believe ? They aren't taking security clearly seriously enough...therefore, is this what they WANT to have leaked ? Por que ?

52. Let's face facts (Especially, our lurker buddies), The Bush Admin is a gaggle of traitors
Is there length that they will not got to hurt this country?

I mean really.

They're handed lead against someone who attacked OUR COUNTRY and then they promptly destroy its usefulness.

These people are simply the worse people ever to run the government.

If they were in charge 60 years ago, everybody on the East Coast would be speaking German, on the West Coast speaking Japanese and we'd have concentration camps in between.

57. No reason for the fake producers to be SITE
They MAY be trying to do their job and defend this country, but the videos that they "discover" are planted for them to discover. Planted so the info could be leaked if/as needed. Indignant, they cry, "You're blowing our cover!" The WH chuckles, knowing SITE is just a tool in the political operation they like to call "The Global War on Terror." SITE doesn't know the GWOT is produced in some guy's basement; the WH wouldn't *want* them to know, to help ensure deniability.

Who knows; maybe SITE was getting close to figuring out that their "source" was feeding them stuff that came from a basement in New Jersey instead of a hideout in Pakistan. Now that that "source" has had their "cover" "blown," SITE won't be surprised that they won't get more videos from them. Later, some other contractor will start getting videos from a "different" "source"--right on time and really reliable.

OBL is such a really useful engine!

56. We all know the video was a fake. What if the administration wanted to end this "small private"
investigation company's snooping into terror? They'd simply leak information about the video and then have their psy-ops fake al-queasy sources pretend to cut off ties and eliminate the snooping problem. Basically, the risk the administration/cia runs is that an external "private investigator" could easily uncover that there is no al queasy and it's all be fabricated by our own people to keep this war going at a rate of billion$ a week, to continue bush/cheney's world domination plan of stealing the US Treasury blind.

87. Rita Katz
Wonder if KO will air this part of this story, CNN didn't.
====

62. What, they believed that the Administration really cared about stopping terrorism?
No, the Bushistas only care about using terrorism, or claims of terrorism, for their own political ends. Any illusions that the Bushistas would keep from destroying secret sources should have been destroyed by the Valerie Plame affair.

Any other firm that might have any means of obtaining secret info should keep it as far away from the Administration as possible.

the Bush WH was willing to destroy an intelligence operation for PR benefit.

Then again, they probably want those intelligence operations destroyed.

Private intelligence gathering companies should be illegal. If they had information that was incriminating to Bush or his allies in the ME, there's no means for Congress to retrieve and review the information.

98. Why assume SITE is anything more than a fake?
As others have posted here, SITE has some connections to groups that have vested interests in continuing the fear factor concerning al q. as others have suggested, maybe SITE is the intermediary for propaganda they are "allowed" to find... the middleman for psy ops/propaganda.

maybe this "leak" was about shutting down SITE's ability to provide fake videos. when was the video supposed to be released?

maybe this "leak" was something to make al q think they had one less spy apparatus to worry about... tho calling al q one thing seems facile at this point.

and, donning my tin foil, maybe the video coincides with a black op that some fear in the portland area.

anyway, my point is the rush to assume SITE is "the good guy" in this situation is knee-jerk b/c the Bush admin. is on "the other side" of this moment. Why was Fox news the first to have this info and broadcast it? Does anyone here really think Fox News would release information that would harm the Bushies? I find that hard to believe, knowing they get their daily talking points from the RNC.

This seems more like psy ops to me, not a real issue. I don't know the purpose for it, but the players aren't on the opposite side in this thing.
