Professors, students protest Rumsfeld's appointment

Students and professors at Stanford University are protesting Donald Rumsfeld's appointment to a campus think tank, saying the former defense secretary does not uphold the "ethical values" of the school.

Shortly after Rumsfeld's appointment was announced in September, professor Pamela Lee began an online petition from faculty members opposed to bringing him to the Hoover Institution.

Since then, the petition has gained more than 3,500 signatures, including nearly 300 faculty members from such diverse disciplines as law, computer science, electrical engineering and drama.

"We view the appointment as fundamentally incompatible with the ethical values of truthfulness, tolerance, disinterested inquiry, respect for national and international laws, and care for the opinions, property and lives of others to which Stanford is inalienably committed," the petition reads.

"As word of the letter got out, my inbox was flooded with messages from professors, students, staff and alumni asking to sign on," said Lee, a professor of art history.

4. Go, Stanford!
I never thought I would be saying that. These days, you never know where real Americans--peace-minded, justice-minded, true blue patriots and heroes--might stand up to be counted. In the military. In the CIA. Even at Stanford--grand central of global corporate predation.

Well, we'll see if it amounts to anything. But you've got to figure something's going on, as to the downfall of Bushitism, if it hits Stanford. Could just be the Corporate Rulers' fallback position kicking in (install Hillary, consolidate the enormous corporate gains under Bush, ahead of potential revolt by the American people, and live to loot another day--after she's achieved a military Draft, and has headed off any real reform of the health system and any other system). Or it could mean that democracy still lives, even at Stanford.

6. I wonder how Stanford's going to react when Condi comes home to roost...
...remember that story a month or two ago in which Condi said "I won't discuss where we went wrong in Iraq, but you can read all about it in my book?"

I applaud Stanford's reaction to Rumsfeld and only hope they remain consistent when it's Rice's turn.
