Burmese military imposes curfew
Source: BBC

Burma's military leaders have imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the main cities Rangoon and Mandalay, which have seen escalating anti-government protests.

Armed troops have now been deployed after tens of thousands of Buddhist monks and civilians again defied the army's warning to stay off the streets.

World leaders at the UN General Assembly have condemned the situation.

President George W Bush said the US was "outraged" by Burma's human rights record and announced further sanctions.

This doesn't sound like a good sign ... the military is acting tough. Last time they did that, they killed over 3,000 people.

4. "A comedian famed for his anti-government jibes became the first well-known activist rounded up
after the curfew imposed Tuesday, following the largest street protests against the country's military rulers in nearly two decades.

Zargana, who uses only one name, was taken away from his home by authorities shortly after midnight. Zargana, along with actor Kyaw Thu and poet Aung Way, led a committee that provided food and other necessities to the Buddhist monks who have spearheaded the protests.

The fates of the actor and poet were not immediately known."
