A house painter and former Army soldier was formally charged Monday with raping and beating his 3-month-old daughter nearly to death.

The victim, meanwhile, clung to life at the University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition. Blackman Township investigators said she has five broken ribs and head injuries.

Coleman was discharged honorably from the Army in March 2006. He told Mazur he works for a local painting contractor.

Those who lived around him at the apartment building didn't know much about him, but were horrified by the situation.

"I feel sorry for the little one," said Nicole Donaldson, who lives a floor below Coleman's home. "It's really creepy, especially being right in this building and having a baby."

There's lots of cases (relatively small to the overall cases, but still more than is acceptable) of rapes of children under 4.

Very rarely, but it happens, you get infants.

I can see how, but not condone, how an adult male could be attracted to a teenager post-puberty. They are in their sexual phase. It's not right, but I can at least grasp it. In caveman days (or even the 19th century) many of them would be paired off / married off at 14 or so.

I can kinda (it's a stretch) see how some like "really young girls" like 7 or so - probably a case of arrested development. Again, I don't condone it, but I can at least accept the premise that some are into that.

I can not, for the life of me, see how you view an infant as a sexual object. They aren't sexual in the least. And I don't know how you'd physically do it either.

I know this happens, but this is the extreme. It doesn't happen much, but it does happen.

People who do stuff like this don't last long in prison, however. And when they get out, it tends to be in a hearse, not a release from the parole board.

This is just some very sick crap. Unfortunately there are also some very sick people in this world.

I'm conflicted on the following feeling, though: I presume they didn't find out about the rape until they did the autopsy. Is she better off now? Had she lived with someone like that, would her childhood be filled with incestuous incidents with her father? That would be miserable. I'm not sure I want to explore it enough to decide, but I admit it made me wonder. Apparently life was going to be hell either way. There were no good solutions to this situation, apparently.
