Longtime listeners, first-time players: Dems find radio voice
Hopes of toppling right-wing talk kings lie with Fargo broadcaster

12:15 AM CST on Monday, January 5, 2004

By COLLEEN McCAIN NELSON / The Dallas Morning News

FARGO, N.D. – The caller from Fargo wants to know why Ed Schultz hates the president.

"You have selective hearing," comes the angry retort. "You are a hard right-winger with no brain. ... Obviously, I'm over your head."

Long drowned out by conservatives who ruled the radio, Democrats say they've finally found their voice – a booming one emanating from this frigid city.

In a nondescript studio on a snow-packed road, Mr. Schultz is preparing to take on the right wing of the radio world.

"They can dish it out. Let's see if they can take it," he says.
From North Dakota to New York City, the push is on by left-leaning broadcasters who aim to take back the airwaves.

Starting today, Mr. Schultz, a self-described progressive, is going national. And efforts are under way to launch a "politically progressive" radio network touting high-profile talent. (snip)

(snip) "Half the country voted for Al Gore," Mr. Schultz said. "Don't tell me they don't listen to radio."

Did anyone see him on C-Span? He's a real character. Not a bit afraid of the lowest, nastiest, most hate-filled, rednecked, threat-spewing, retarded right-winger.

Maybe we'll have something to celebrate today. Wooo HOOOOO. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

counter Limbaugh very effectively. He has a little of Limbaugh's bombast so viewers would enjoy him. But, he has facts to back him up.

I wonder that we want a Limbaugh of the Left, but how else are we going to capture the crowd that wants "a Strong Man" if you get my point.

for Pete's sake! I've been listening to this man going on three years now and he is one of the best out there. Unfortunately, the IEAmerica radio station he works for will be going out of business soon. It has been funded by the UAW all this time, but they plan to drop it at the end of February.

Mike Malloy needs a job, and we need his voice in the mix. I certainly hope that left-radio is a growing trend and that Mike will still find a niche there.

17. A November article about Schultz
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 07:58 AM by JudiLyn
(snip) His blunt approach makes man a talker

November 30, 2003

BY JULIE HINDS
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Is Ed Schultz the liberal answer to Rush Limbaugh?

"Don't hang that tire around my neck," says the blunt-speaking North Dakota talk radio host.

He describes himself like this: "I'm a football jock. I'm a Democrat with a gun. I'm really scaring these conservatives. My style is very aggressive. We know the conservatives can dish it out. Let's see if they can take it."

Is he done yet? Not by a long shot.

In January, Schultz will launch a national talk-radio show. Democracy Radio, the nonprofit group that's trying to bring more progressive voices to the airwaves, helped develop it.

25. My only fear is that even this show will kill traditional "liberal" values
I am suspect of anyone who tries to re-define "liberal." "Liberal" has an historical, moral, and decent meaning. It is being killed off by people who want to cater to what they mistakenly deem to be the "mainstream" or moderate road. The biggest difference and the simplest difference between the right and the left...conservative and liberal is simply issues of racism. there is no really Democrat or Republican although most republicans are truly conservative. The issue of race is what still divides this country into political camps as proved by the Dixicrats who routinely were segregationists.

It's not about "states rights" unless it is about the right of states to segregate and discrimante. Just look at the states rights that have been erroded by the Republicans under this administration.

It's not about "welfare" unless it's about welfare for minorities as proved by the amount of corporate welfare, farm welfare, business welfare, and the huge amounts of "relocation" welfare for EU immigrants.

It's not about "government spending" or "big government" except where government devises and funds programs to help the needy and underserved in this country as proved by the huge increases in government spending under each and every Republican President since FDR.

Sadaly, we are losing our nation because of misconceptions, misinformation, and stealth facist propaganda that still has most people in this country still fighting the civil war eventhough they don't even know what that war was really about.

Left in the air?
Liberals are working to make their voices heard on talk radio
By Mark Jurkowitz, Globe Staff, 1/5/2004

<snip>
Walsh, a Harvard MBA who worked as an AOL executive and a technology adviser to the Democratic National Committee, hopes to break the conservative chokehold on talk radio with a new network of liberal talkers -- led perhaps by comedians Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo -- slated to debut in the spring (and)...plans to buy radio stations in five major American cities, including Boston, and program up to 18 hours of liberal talk a day on them. It's too soon to say whether his concept will work, but there is a growing hunger on the left to do battle on the airwaves.

"There is a very effective right-wing echo chamber," says Ralph Neas, president of the liberal advocacy group People for the American Way, citing such hosts as Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Bill O'Reilly. "It's a very effective way of getting their message out." "I know the Democrats have been stewing about this for a long time," says Ed Schultz, a Democratic talk-show host in Fargo, N.D. "The Democrats, as a party, have underestimated the power of talk radio. It's absolutely a three-hour bashing session against the liberals."<snip>

Liberals seem like an endangered species in talk radio. According to Talkers magazine, four of the five biggest audiences in radio belong to conservatives: Limbaugh, Hannity, Michael Savage, and moralizing advice guru Laura Schlessinger. (Shock jock Howard Stern is the one nonconservative interloper.) Tom Athans, who runs Democracy Radio, an organization aimed at finding and syndicating liberal talkers, says 300 of the 340 political shows he surveyed featured conservative hosts; 40 were hosted by liberals. And only two of those liberals -- Schultz and Randi Rhodes in West Palm Beach, Fla. -- are getting what he calls "killer ratings."<snip>

Walsh, the CEO of Progress Media Inc., is trying to create his own market force with a highly publicized -- if largely undisclosed -- plan to create a liberal network. Officials at his Central Air radio network are talking to Franken and Garofalo and have made several executive hires, including "Daily Show" cocreator Lizz Winstead, former CNN producer Shelly Lewis, and ex-Chicago radio executive Dave Logan. One on-air personality officially locked in is Martin Kaplan, director of the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication, who will host a daily hourlong show on media issues. Published reports also indicate that comedian Barry Crimmins is coming aboard to deliver commentaries.<snip>

55. "bitchin' and moanin'"? That's all Limbaugh did for his first 5 years
In the post-Reagan wasteland, when policies of privatisation and trickle down had been shown up as so much bullshit, conservatives were bitchin' and moanin' aplenty, and the gasbag himself was at their helm. When Clinton slid past the blockade in 1992, you should have heard the whining. And it changed. Slowly but surely, Limbaugh's audience share grew and so did his ambitions.

Gingrich didn't credit Limbaugh for the 1994 operation in a vaccuum. All that bitchin' and moanin' really got things done.

He said Hillary Clinton and Tom Daschle will be on today.

Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 05:03 PM by JudiLyn
Something is wrong at the station, however. The sound keeps cutting out. It's been out a lot.

Ed needs a LOT more experience with managing time alottments, however. He seems to be having a hard time of it today.

He said that the station has been flooded with internet response. I think they may have more than they can handle.

This is his first day with the Jones network, from what I can understand. Surely it'll get smoother.

Someone from D.U. had called, and only got a couple of minutes. Ed asked him for more details, and he was starting to address the "tax cuts" for the middle class, and Ed ran completely out of time and had to bail out. Now THAT was disappointing. You could tell the D.U.'er knows his stuff, too.

Don't give up, DU'er from the East Coast. When Ed gets things under control, you'll have a better time of getting heard, NO DOUBT.

Later edit:

After having heard more of the guy, I'm really not too sure what he's up to. A college kid called and mentioned the Florida recount debacle, and Ed said the best things Democrats can do is simply "move on" and get onto the next business.

I REALLY hope the Republicans haven't sent in a ringer, a guy pretending to be the "voice" the Democrats lack, who wills start misrepresenting Democrats altogether. God knows we've already seen enough of that right here on this message board.

50. Concerning the history of the Bush-worshipping media
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 05:57 PM by JudiLyn
Hillary said that if you knew her, you'd recognize she believed the media could definitely go overboard pursuing people, but in Bush's case the media is MISSING IN ACTION.

It's great to hear that pointed out.

She mentioned that if her husband had members of his staff withholding information from the Justice Department, as in the case of refusing to disclose who informed on Valerie Plame, there would be a total uproar from the Republicans DEMANDING that the President should get this information available.

That's true, too.

Don't give up on this guy permanently. He, at least, can get some great guests we don't get to hear from the right-wing media often.

Howard Dean's plane has just landed in "the frozen tundra" in North Dakota, if he doesn't make the show today, he'll make it tomorrow.

On edit:

Howard Dean just checked in.

I've just written the info. you shared down, going to listen Friday.

Definitely need to try it out, and the other interesting shows, too.

For any people who tried to listen to the Ed Schultz show, the engineers are screwing around with the equipment right now, and don't know they are broadcasting. They are evidently checking out their entire set-up.

Looks as if they had a TON of technical problems today, so whatever it was which screwed things up, it should be corrected, at some point.
