McConnell: Craig won't resign if case is overturned
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that embattled Sen. Larry Craig will not resign if he's able to get the disorderly conduct case against him dismissed in the next 25 days.

"He said that he is going to try to get the case in Minneapolis dismissed. That if he is unable to have that disposed of, prior to Sept. 30, it is his intention to resign from the Senate as he expressed last Saturday," McConnell told reporters.

"If he is able to get the case favorably disposed of in Minneapolis, it would be his intention to come back to the Senate to deal with the Ethics Committee case that he knows that he will have and to try to finish his term," he added.

8. This just makes no sense to me at all
Are the pukes trying to oust him in the first place really because he plead guilty to a misdemeanor? Or is it because of the gay sex. If its cause of the former then they got a lot of people they need to start kicking out. If its cause of the later then how is him wriggling out of the charge going to change anything?

I haven't understood this thing from the get go. Other than his rampant hypocrisy I just find the whole thing sad. The guy is clearly closeted this isn't even close to the first whiff of him doing this sort of thing his denial of it makes him look foolish but , hell Inhoff looks foolish every time he opens his mouth I don't think being an idiot precludes you from sitting on the senate.

I guess I could understand it if they wanted him out because of the hypocrisy but clearly cause they aren't going after vitter thats not the issue. It just bothers me that seemingly no one involved in this whole affair wants to be honest other than the cop.

10. Only it probably won't be a 'disorderly conduct' case anymore.
That was what he plead guilty to in the plea-bargain. As soon as his guilty plea is retracted (if they will even allow him to do that), the plea-bargain is off and they can go forward with the original charges once again - LEWD CONDUCT.

Go ahead, Senator - shoot yourself in the *other* foot now!

18. Oh the Irony!
The pathos, the drama, and the COMEDY!

Larry Craig doesn't know when to cut his losses. He's eligible for social security and Medicare now. Of course his political contacts will expire with the 2008 election, so if he needs to pull in income, he really ought to start now before that dribbles out of his fingers, too.

He doesn't have the time or money for courtroom chaos.

19. ??
Is it possible to get your own guilty plea overturned? And I would assume that the result would be that he would go to trial on the original offense (lewd conduct). Is he really asinine enough to do that? I hope so.

17. I hear your CONCERN and welcome to DU, VfH
Yes, there is much prurient fascination here and in other countries - ever seen British tabloids? - and if politicians would just keep out of private lives and sexuality, the hypocrisy wouldn't be such an issue. This is a political board, and there are levels of deceit and intrigue right now on just about every issue. This one included. That full-throated toe tapper was a major anti-sexual freedom demagogue, and when it turns out that he too is a dirty, naughty boy, well, people gonna talk. That spans centuries and cultures. Such is Human Nature.

Oh yeah, and Karma duude. :hippie:

Luckily we can bypass threads we aren't interested in. Personal responsibility and all. Sometimes temptation and curiosity get the better of one, and if so, the only responsible thing to do is at least comment in a way that adds to the conversation.

Done well, it can raise us all up a bit.

I found your comment short and to the point, with dry humor and a just hint of bitter irony.
Classic vintage, like "Assault on Reason" boiled down to near haiku form :)

The prurient
fascination, continues
such is America.

Was that meant to be so poetic, or are you just naturally gifted?

so it goes, and WELCOME :toast:
