Apple slashes iPhone price
Source: Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc on Wednesday said the company was cutting the price of its iPhone and was on track to sell one million phones before the end of September.

"We want to make the iPhone even more affordable" Jobs said at a product event, announcing that the price of the model with 8 gigabytes of storage was cut to $399 from $599.

Jobs also unveiled an iPod with a touch screen that can browse the Internet wirelessly, fighting to maintain the digital media lead at a time when the company faces renewed attacks from rivals.

Jobs, who also showed off an iPod nano with a video screen, said the company plans to refresh its entire line of music players. In addition, Apple's iTunes Web music store will begin selling songs over wireless connections, he said.

1. Hope the $599-ers aren't feeling too stupid.
Maybe people have been thinking, "I could by a REAL computer for a couple of hundred dollars more."

pay more to have it first. The profit made from those sales allows the company to reduce prices.

21. Yup
About a year from now we'll be seeing other cellphones that mimic the iPhone. Then we'll start seeing actual telephones that can mimic it, especially with cable telephone and internet phone (VOIP) service picking up steam.

Then, we'll all have videophones :D

Well, it's a dream, anyway.

34. But the iPhone beats the Prada
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/battlemodo/settling-this-iphone-vs-lg-prada-nonsense-261172.php

The LG is smaller, sure. It's a better size, for an un-smartphone.It's the nicest LG I've ever seen. But it often uses it's touchscreen to boring effect. There is no interface advantage here. You touch buttons on screen to scroll and click around, much like a Palm or WM6 Phone. The menu design itself is similar to that on any high end LG phone, like, say the Shine. The 3-inch diagonal comes in useful as the entirety of it becomes a viewfinder in camera mode. The touchscreen let's you drag the home screen's clock around, and that fishy in the photo above is actually "touchable". And it ships with some touchscreen games. But generally speaking, it operates just like a regular phone. No revolutionary usage models here, either.

The iPhone uses it's touchscreen to zoom photos and webpages, flick scroll through long lists. iPhone has all the iTunes and data syncing integration built in, and the neato factor of coverflow. iPhone has networked widget compatibility for weather, stocks (yawn), and who knows what else is coming down the line. The Prada's sync software is rudimentary, allowing you to transfer contacts and calendar appointments. The Prada does have 3G, although that may be in Europe only flavors, while the iPhone only has EDGE and WiFi. (Since this is an import phone for the foreseeable future, it's likely.) The LG's 3-inch screen is 240 x 400. The Apple's is 3.5 inches, at 320 x 480. 8GB vs whatever you can fit into the LG's few megs of internal mem, plus the microSD slot. The browser sucks on the LG phone. LG phone has the advantage of being able to run J2ME progs. And has SMS and IM, which IMO are very obvious things that the iPhone should have. (Firmware!)

The Prada would be a good phone, the nicest non-business user touchscreen phone, I can think of at the moment. But at $700-850 bucks, it's just way too expensive. The iPhone isn't perfect, but the amount of innovation it has pushes it into another class. This is a really stupid comparison: iPhone wins. (The better comparison is iPhone to Helio Ocean of N95.

52. Irrelevant. If you think a bigger price tag for a lesser product is a good deal,
by all means get the Prada.

Lam likes Apple because its a better product. He's not alone in his take on the more expensive Prada with fewer features vs the less expensive Apple with more features.

A company as big as Apple can offer new products at the same price it will be a year from now. They don't so they can increase profits to shareholders, that's all. They just have the market figured out, that's all.

37. They are offering money back.
I bought mine last week. I went back today and got $200 back. I applied that to upgrade to the 8 GB and STILL got $43 back.

I already have a real computer. I want a phone that will do what it does and for the most part the iPhone does. PLUS I get an iPod. I love my iPhone and I don't feel ripped off.

The upgrade and refund are icing on the cake and all it cost was another trip to the store.

56. I have no doubt it's the exact same stripped down OS X as the iPhone
I mean why would they rewrite it?

It should be MUCH easier to hack the iPod considering (a) they've already broken the same OS open on the iPhone and (b) the iPod touch isn't locked down like the iPhone. And it supports disk mode which means you'll be able to browse the filesystem easily.

30. I tend to do the opposite of that
Way back when, I thought I'd practically stolen a Quadra 605 Macintosh. But less than a month later, the first of the PowerPCs came out. When I'd outgrown my Quadra, the prices of the PPC magically dropped, but a last minute financial glitch forced me to wait a month--when the first of the G3s came out! I bought one in 1998, and because it's been so upgradable, I'm using it to this day! It's just about maxed out, though, so I expect I'll need one of the all-in-ones that just came out within the next 18-24 months. Of course, Apple will have something ELSE out by then...

A Touch Of Death About The iPhone Touchscreen?
http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/personal_tech/article2236383.ece

Apple was today monitoring the latest mini-crisis to hit its much-hyped iPhone after some users began reporting that the touchscreen did not work.

Threads on several Apple forums – including the company's own – have been devoted to the problem, which causes parts of the device's screen to go 'dead' and stop responding to the touch of a finger.

Typically the dead spot is a strip about half an inch wide that runs the width of the iPhone's screen as it is held vertically, users experiencing the problem said.

In one case, the strip ran across the Unlock button, which meant that the user was unable to answer the phone when it rang.
===================================================================
===================================================================
Apple iPhone screen problems may get worse - The dreaded dead strip
http://www.intomobile.com/2007/08/10/analyst-apple-iphone-screen-problems-may-get-worse-the-dreaded-dead-strip.html

Just when we thought it couldn’t get worse (seriously, we thought it would stay an isolated and rare defect), Nomura International analyst, Richard Windsor released a note to clients indicating that the iPhone’s “dead strip” display problem could become more widespread.

Apple bought the rights to the screen technology used in the iPhone from a Finnish firm. Finnish firm reported that usage led to the same unresponsive display problems after some time. Apparently, the technology uses chemical deposition to register touch-inputs based on heat, but 3 to 6 months of “extensive use” would start to degrade the technology and cause a lose of sensitivity to touch-inputs. This suggests that the relatively new iPhone fleet in the US could start to exhibit similar problems with time.

27. Don't forget the battery!
I understand you have to send it in to get replaced, and then pay for it if it is out of warranty. My blackberry has a battery I can get to and replace easily. I'll stick with it.

http://www.ipodbatteryfaq.com/#22

Q: Is the iPhone battery replaceable?

A: Yes. Apple has an official out-of-warranty battery replacement program for $79 + $6.95 shipping. Currently, the official battery replacement service for iPhone requires sending the iPhone to Apple, as with iPod. Apple will provide a loaner AppleCare Service iPhone ("AppleCare Service Phone") while your iPhone is being repaired or serviced for a fee of $29. Such service will be possible via any any Apple Retail location, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or via an online service request process. Apple actually replaces your whole iPhone with an equivalent new model or factory-refurbished model in a brand new enclosure, with its own 90-day service warranty. Similar procedures will be developed for worldwide markets. There will likely be several other do-it-yourself or mail-in methods of replacing the battery when necessary, as with iPod. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

This service will likely also be available as an on-demand service via Apple Retail stores, as with iPod; you can walk out the same day with a replacement iPhone. The SIM card containing the phone number and identity is simply moved from your existing iPhone to the replacement iPhone, and one sync with iTunes gets all of your contacts, music, data, and anything else on the iPhone back to the way it was.

The iPhone Out-of-warranty Battery Replacement Program is only required for iPhones that are no longer covered by the warranty or AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone. Since iPhone was released on June 29, 2007, and has a one year warranty, June 29, 2008, is the earliest date this service would be needed.

For most people, that means 3 or 4+ years of FULL BATTERY POWER.

Not many people keep a phone or an iPod for that long.

Apple excels. the much maglined hockey puck mouse felt really good in the hand and was perfect for a child's small hand. It's all about user experience. Don't judge the look until you have it in your hand and use it. You should be able to pick it up and without reading anything, figure out how to use in short order.

24. Microsoft cuts $50 from Zune price
Maybe someone will buy one now.
__________________________

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. slashed $50 from the price of its Zune digital media player Wednesday, just before Apple Inc. announced an iPhone price cut and additions to its market-leading iPod line.

The 30-gigabyte Zune now costs $199, the Redmond, Wash.-based software maker said on its Zune Insider blog.

"It's part of the normal product life cycle, something we've had on the books for months," wrote Cesar Menendez, a Microsoft employee and Zune Insider blogger.

Zune comes in a handful of colors, but only one hard drive size, while Apple's music players come in a variety of shapes and sizes and account for the vast majority of digital music player sales in the U.S.

Man Goes Through Vasectomy to Get iPhone
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/08/man_goes_through_vasectomy_to.html
A Gizmodo reader underwent a vasectomy to get an Apple iPhone, following wife's orders after a roadtrip with his kids to Boise, Colorado. But fear not, dear readers-with-your-manly-parts-still-intact, because his amazing tale of heroic Apple fandom doesn't include any Bobbit-style genital violence. Keep reading to know why and the —strange— happy finish.

Mr. Johnson (no, I am not kidding) is a confessed Apple Fanboy. "To the extreme," according to his own words. On January, after years of rumors and speculation, he watched in awe as Apple finally introduced the iPhone to the world, bringing Universal Peace, Health and Happiness to the Galaxy. Or maybe just a stiffy happiness to people like Mr. Johnson. Like many others, he was bewildered by the device. At last, the holy JesusPhone! –he must have thought at the time. He wanted it. Badly. And, as you probably guessed, here's where our story turns awry.

I love my mac, but that phone price is too much for my pocketbook. I'd probably lose it!

Losing it IS a real issue, though.

Since you have a Mac, you might want to wait and see the next generation to see what kind of software upgrades and interactivity they do. There will probably come a time when you wonder how you lived without it.

Oh well, the money was never an issue when I bought one for myself and my office staff. The phone is just plain cool and to use it is an awesome experience and well worth the money.

It's good to see them drop the price so that others might be able to afford one.

It plays songs, videos, audiobooks, podcasts downloaded from iTunes.

"Six million songs. To go.

Music happens. Even if you’re not at home to download it. But with the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPhone, it won’t happen without you. Later this month, just find yourself a Wi-Fi hot spot and tap the iTunes button. You can browse, search, preview, buy, and instantly download music to your iPhone."

T-Mobile? I don't know.

play your songs, syncs with your iCal, etc.

so, since the iPhone already does all of that, along with web browsing, video, photos, widgets, etc. i'd expect all of that and a bag of chips. T-Mobile, not yet, there's still that agreement with AT&T. well, there is an option, but that requires hacking the iPhone, but what's moral grey areas between friends! it's the info age, we all get a little mud on ourselves!

54. No, I'm not saying they should keep the price high. Not at all.
It just seemed such a short period of time before the reduction. Not that I didn't expect it, it was just so soon. Or so it seemed to me.

I suppose I was expecting a reduction closer to Thanksgiving to stimulate sales to those who were still slightly reluctant to purchase during the holiday spending rush. That still would give ample time to exhaust the higher end market.

55. Oh, o.k. My misunderstanding.
Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 10:25 PM by Hissyspit
I spent $499 on my 4GB phone last week, went back in after I saw this thread, and now I have an 8GB for $399, so I think it was a very good move on Apple's part to do it as soon as possible. Good word of mouth. My last cell phone was $250 and did so much less than what the iPhone does, that I think $399 is resonable, although it would certainly behoove them to lower the price more if they can without affecting quality.

I posted about the phone last week and was surprised at the Mac Haters who came out and posted things without knowing what they were talking about, as you can see above thread.

(I don't have any problem with postings about labor, environmental or similar progressive concerns with regards to Apple, but that's not what they were. They were saying derogatory things about the phone without understanding it.)

73. I understand
Rest assured, I'm not a Mac hater. I worked in desktop publishing for years and respect their stability and ease of use.

I consider the iphone to be a neat little contraption, but it was out of my price range and I was OK with that. It just got closer to my being able to afford one so I'm pretty happy about this reduction from a consumer standpoint.

You make excellent points in regards to the potential for good word of mouth, and the average cost of a traditional cell phone.

I freely admit to a long standing love affair with electronics. It began sometime around the days of my Atari 2600 and my brothers coveted TI-99/4A computer. I look forward to some day telling my grandchildren about the days gone by when we had to boot from a 5.25 floppy disk and 8-bit microprocessors were considered cool.

70. I might get one in a year when my current phone contract ends.
But until then im very happy with my Nokia 5500 sport. It's rugged, water resistant, and does everything the Iphone does, AND has a radio player adn a very high quality 2 MP camera. It also has blue tooth to talk to other things. The best part is it's totally UNLOCKED! AND NOT UNDER ATnT!!!!!

Well it will be totally unlocked (as in provider I have all the features available to me) at the end of my contract. I did it with my last phone - a sony 600 - I went in said I want my phone unlocked, and they said OK!

Mind you the laws controlling cell phones here in Europe (the Netherlands) are a HELL of a lot stricter than in the US. They actually demand accountability here! Mindy you it could take months and loads of expense paying for the tech support line (yes the tight fuckers charge for tech support on things they fucked up) but the law does demand an amount of accountability, which is why the phones are (feature) unlocked when you get them with your contract.

They also have convenient places to put your dead batteries to have them recycled!

The iPhone will not be allowed here UNTIL it is completely unlocked and able to be used by any provider. A fact that I fear will delay it past the time I get a new phone...so it'll have to be my wife who gets it ;). Currently we prefer (in general) the Sony phones. They do it all, it's easy to replace songs, etc with the memory card, as well as LONG BATTERY LIFE!

The main, major complaint I see about the iPhone is that the battery life is atrocious, and it's not easily replaceable. IF I wanted to I could (and do frequently to get at my micro SD card) pop out my battery, and pop in a spare if I was on a long trip far from reliable power.

This is not a minor issue to people who live outside of metropolis! I have power here at work and home, but when I travel I have no guarantee of power. Also extensive use (I listen to pod casts during my 1.5 hour commute each way) sucks the battery dry pretty fast (about 20 hours) and that's on a phone that can last a week with light use! (my old phone did 10 days, the one before that two weeks!!! (but no special features and a BW screen LOL) )

The iPhone is the ultimate example of a throw away culture. It's a symptom. Many other mega phones have been able to do what the iPhone does, and for much longer. What they lacked was the cult of apple.

Will I get one with my contract - It's a possibility I'm a gadget geek! But The reason I choose the Nokia this time around as opposed to the Sony was I wanted a phone that worked! I wanted a GOOD antenna and battery life (well the antenna is great at least) everything else was a happy side effect. Having a 8GB (more in a year?) drive on a phone rocks, but I have other needs as well. If I can get a great phone, that happens to have WiFi and a so-so screen I may take it over a iPhone.

After all, my FIRST priority is a phone, NOT a new toy!

72. At $599 the iPhone was a stretch, at $399 it is very appealing!
$300 is generally the point that gadgets go from appealing, to being in my pocket, or attached to my TV (TiVo HD for example was a no-brainer at $299, but the original Series 3 at $799 was out of the question).

I've "played" with the iPhone a few times at various Apple stores, and like it a lot.

77. Late Update: Apple gives iPhone early adopters $100 in store credit
After a day of outraged comments from early iPhone buyers who are upset about Apple’s decision to drop the iPhone’s price $200 to $399, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has posted an open letter on the Apple Web site and said that Apple will offer a $100 store credit.

Jobs stands by Apple’s decision to lower the price. “It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone ‘tent’. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season,” said Jobs.

imbeds him/herself into a bridge abutment while talking/browsing/trying to find a song/e-mailing/playing a game/watching a movie/downloading Paris Hilton pictures while they're driving.

84. Obviously Apple wasn't selling enough at $599...
...so they were forced to drop the price by $200. I forget the figures, but from what I read they were way below projected sales at the original price.

But god forbid Jobs admits this for fear the public will suspect the iPhone isn't such a raving success after all.

I'm stuck with my Samsung cell phone for two more years anyway per my contract with Verizon. My fingers are too big and uncoordinated to work with those tiny icons anyway. I need my PC's big ol' keyboard and mouse to navigate the internet successfully. Hey, I'm an aging baby boomer so what do ya expect???

They got what they paid for and as with everything else electronic, newer versions that do more which also cost less are inevitable.
