(Sen.) Craig (R-Idaho) Arrested, Pleads Guilty Following Incident in Airport Restroom
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 04:14 PM by Newsjock
Source: Roll Call

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.

A spokesman for Craig described the incident as a "he said/he said misunderstanding," and said the office would release a fuller statement later Monday afternoon.

After he was arrested, Craig, who is married, was taken to the Airport Police Operations Center to be interviewed about the lewd conduct incident, according to the police report. At one point during the interview, Craig handed the plainclothes sergeant who arrested him a business card that identified him as a U.S. Senator and said, "What do you think about that?" the report states.

250.  I live in Ketchum Id !!
I've met Senator Craig twice, back when I was active with "The Alliance for the Wild Rockies" he pissed me off both times, he hates us tree huggers. He also isn't very big on Blaine County (where I live) because, --- being in an area where the local economy is based on recreation we have a lot of environmentally consciences people. We are the only blue county in Idaho.

We are currently on the edge of a huge forest fire. I just returned home after a couple of days because my evacuation status had been changed from mandatory to voluntary, but this can change any minute, the fire is right over the hill from my house.

Senator Craig paid us a visit last week and more or less just wished us luck and left. I wasn't surprised. I hate to gloat but after reading this on the front page of The Idaho Statesman this morning, ------- I'm laughing so hard, ---- I just might have to sedate myself.

Oh well, It's been a rough week and we have a rough one ahead, We deserve a good laugh. te he he he he

The conservative senator has supported an amendment to the Constitution banning same-sex marriage and voted for the Defense of Marriage Act in the 1990s. Craig, who served in the National Guard, has also spoken out against homosexuals serving in the military.

246. Congressmen and Senators don't get impeached
because impeachment is supposed to be the people's bulwark against appointed officials and tyrannical Presidents.

The Senate could vote to censure or expel him, but that's unlikely. Otherwise, it's up to the voters who put him in there.

65. Idaho is leaning more Democratic than it was a few years ago...
I went to high school in Idaho a couple years ago, and my parents still live there, so I know a little about the politics...

Although Idaho is very heavily Republican, the Republican candidate in the 2006 Governor's race took only 52% of the vote, whereas the Democrat took 44% and won Ada county, the state's largest, by a margin of 52-46%.

It's also noteworthy that Sen. Craig faced a very weak Democratic opponent the last time around, whereas his 2008 opponent, Larry LaRocco, served as a US Congressman for Idaho's 1st District from 1990 to 1994, before being taken out wtih the "Republican Revolution".

Of course, it's also worth noting that Larry LaRocco is a DLC-supporting "Democrat-Lite" who would very much be in the mold of Sen. Ben Nelson, etc. if he were elected to the Senate.

But Idaho's state capital, Boise, where my parents live, is starting to trend Democratic. In 2006, 4 of the 5 State Senate seats in Boise went to Democrats, as did most of the House seats, so much so that Boise was considered a "Democratic sweep". The City of Boise also voted "No" on the anti same-sex marriage constitutional amendment that was on the ballot that year, and in 2004 they elected Idaho's first GLBT state legislator, Rep. Nicole LeFavour.

68. That's good to hear....I live right next to North Idaho, and it's still rabidly right wing.
The good ol' boys from the mountains in the north are NOT going to like this news. Thats why I foresee a resignation. They need a strong incumbent for this next election, and Craig will be very weak.

Interesting that this news broke on the Gonzales resignation day....I imagine it's no accident.

75. If it's true that he's up for re-election in 2008, his

replacement would serve out the rest of his term and then have to run for re-election.

That's how Georgia got stuck with Zell Miller. He was a good Dem governor and when GOP Sen. Paul Coverdell died, Dem governor Roy Barnes appointed Zell to replace him.

It was such a short time before Zell had to run for re-election that he hadn't done anything weird in D.C. yet, so naturally he was re-elected. Then Georgians were going :wtf: for six years about Zell.

So I don't see anyway around Craig's replacement having to run for re-election next year, which probably gives the Dem candidate a better chance.

I agree that Craig will probably resign "to spend more time with his family" and the GOP guv will appoint another Gross Old Pervert to fill out his term.

129. If there's a resignation, you just know what's going to be said`
Need to spend more time with the family
Though why they would want to spend time with him is a mystery

Problem with alcohol/drugs and entering rehab
Can you just imagine the group sessions with Foley, et al?

Have confessed to my wife/family/god, and they have forgiven
What is it with these people? If I did these things and was caught, there'd be a vacuum behind me as my wife kicked me out the door. Forgiveness? Give me a break!

A quick question for all the male DUers out there who have used public restrooms in airports. How many times have you done anything in a men's room that has been - or, hell, can be - misconstrued as lewd behavior. How complicated is it for these republicans to use a friggin' men's room. Enter men's room. Unzip zipper. Stare at wall in front of you. Pee. Zip up zipper. Wash hands. Leave. Where's the room for misunderstanding? What part of this has them confused? And remember, people elected these idiots. Maybe that should be a debate question. How do you use a men's room? How can we trust you with foreign policy if you somehow are unable to use a men's room? What have we become??

159. Good point.
Man rules dictate that you look straight ahead while peeing. If there are three urinals available use the one to the far right or far left, not the middle, as it increases the odds that you'll have someone next to you. And never...let me repeat...never pee next to a guy who's already peeing unless it is the last urinal available. That is all.

What the hell did a US senator think would happen if he got caught having sex in a public restroom?

According to the incident report, Sgt. Dave Karsnia was working as a plainclothes officer on June 11 investigating civilian complaints regarding sexual activity in the men’s public restroom in which Craig was arrested.

Airport police previously had made numerous arrests in the men’s restroom of the Northstar Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal in connection with sexual activity.

142. yep, with some of the comments I have read above
I am thinking many here would be surprised by the sex life of the average person. Plenty of married men have sex with other men, with prostitutes, with other married people of either gender. When they do it in a public bathroom they can get caught and that part of their sex life is exposed. It doesn't mean that they are gay or "in the closet" -- it may only mean that they are sexually compulsive and possibly even turned on by the danger.

A few other responses above haunt me. Jail/prison is NOT a good place for gay people or for people to "be themselves" Gender preference is a range, not a choice between 2 preferences. Cross-dressing is an activity common to both heterosexual and gay men and it is therefore independent of sexuality. It is a myth that gay men want to be women. MMM-kay?

I'm gay, and I can't imagine (Can Not Imagine) having sex with a stranger in a bathroom. My partner and I are very out lesbians who are deeply committed to one another.

Obviously, we are much healthier - in all respects - than filthy people like this Republican "family values" senator who supports hate legislation against gay people and skulks around in public restrooms soliciting sex from strangers.

Seriously. These people need therapy.

151. I totally agree.
I think the RNC is a criminal syndicate and they cannot allow themselves to run smart, ethical people for Congress. Last thing they want are people with integrity, voting their own mind on bills. I suspect that the majority of national Republicans have issues that could be used against them, but the RNC looks the other way as long as they get the vote they want. There have been way too many of these episodes to think this is coincidental.

Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 05:47 PM by ScottytheRadical
One thing I've really got to wonder: Okay, so some people like having anonymus sex. There's nothing terribly bad about that in and of itself. But why exactly do closeted Republicans feel the need to do it in PUBLIC restrooms, where people who *aren't* looking for sex could be present? I know for a fact that there are gay strip clubs and at least one male bathhouse in Washington D.C., where guys who are looking for sex with other guys can find it perfectly *legally* and without bothering people who aren't looking for sex. But there's no logical reason to try to seduce strangers in a public bathroom - I'm a gay male, and that's not something I've ever done before. So I find it *really* hard to grasp why closeted Republican politicans seem to have such a fetish for picking up trade in bathroom stalls...

50. Somehow Senator Larry Craig's website just seems so ironic now
GOAL ONE: Deliver timely, high quality constituent service

While I am interested in the views of all Americans, my primary responsibility to serve Idahoans bumps their requests, letters and messages to the top of the stack.

My colleagues in the Senate have similar priorities. If you are not an Idahoan, and want to express your opinion or you need help with a federal agency, I hope you will give your Senators the opportunity to serve you.

As one of Idaho's United States Senators, I believe it is important to listen to and understand the views and beliefs of my fellow Idahoans so that I may properly represent Idaho on the Floor of the United States Senate. My position as a federal representative also allows me to intercede on the behalf of my constituents to assist them with any problem they may encounter when dealing with the federal government or its agencies.

Whether you wish to communicate your views, ask for assistance, or determine my stance on a particular issue, I hope you will take a moment to get in touch with me. For your convenience, there are several ways you may do so. These contact options are described below.

If you have questions or need information about a particular legislative matter, I would encourage you to use this website as a resource. The information you need may already be available online, and a few likely starting points are offered in the Website Resources section at the bottom of this page.

(Sung to the tune of YMCA)

Young man, there's a need to look around.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you're on the downlow.
You can play there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

You can hang out with all the boys ...

It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.
It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.

You can get yourself cruised, you can have a good feel,
You can do whatever you will...

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, will you watch me pee?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your junk on my shelf,
And just go there, to the j.o.h.n.
I'm sure they can help you today.

It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.
It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.

It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.
It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.

You can get yourself cruised, you can have a good feel,
You can do whatever you will...

Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, now we are both here to cruise.
I felt a man at a quarter past five.
I felt his hole wow,it was so tight ...

That's when someone came up to me,
And said, old man, take a walk up the street.
There's a place there called the y.m.c.a.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.
It's fun to play at the j-o-h-n.

They have everything for you men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

J-o-h-n... you'll find it at the j-o-h-n.

Young man, young man, there's a need to feel around.
Young man, young man, get yourself on the ground.

J-o-h-n... you'll find it at the j-o-h-n.

Young man, young man, there's a need to feel around.
Young man, young man, get yourself on the ground.

J-o-h-n... you'll find it at the j-o-h-n.

"At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot.... The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area. Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times."

Isn't this the GOPer that was reported on w-a-y back by the guy outing the closeted RWers? I just remember the story was about a GOPer who was notorious for hanging out in bathrooms and engaging in certain behavior, and it that the latest episode had taken place in an airport. There were no names at the time, just a lot of speculation here on DU just who it was.

This has GOT to be that guy!

249. Apparently, Craig has been crusing for gay sex since 1967:
Popkey

As McJoan reminds us, an Idaho Statesman reporter was working on the Craig story for awhile and then it got held up in lawyer limbo. Here's what he writes today:

In an interview on May 14, Craig told the Idaho Statesman he'd never engaged in sex with a man or solicited sex with a man. The Craig interview was the culmination of a Statesman investigation that began after a blogger accused Craig of homosexual sex in October. Over five months, the Statesman examined rumors about Craig dating to his college days and his 1982 pre-emptive denial that he had sex with underage congressional pages.

The most serious finding by the Statesman was the report by a professional man with close ties to Republican officials. The 40-year-old man reported having oral sex with Craig at Washington's Union Station, probably in 2004. The Statesman also spoke with a man who said Craig made a sexual advance toward him at the University of Idaho in 1967 and a man who said Craig "cruised" him for sex in 1994 at the REI store in Boise. The Statesman also explored dozens of allegations that proved untrue, unclear or unverifiable.

Craig, 62, was elected to Congress in 1980. Should he win re-election in 2008 and complete his term, he would be the longest-serving Idahoan ever in Congress. His record includes a series of votes against gay rights and his support of a 2006 amendment to the Idaho Constitution that bars gay marriage and civil unions.

The conservative senator has supported an amendment to the Constitution banning same-sex marriage and voted for the Defense of Marriage Act in the 1990s. Craig, who served in the National Guard, has also spoken out against homosexuals serving in the military.

Senator Craig's quote this evening: At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were miscunstruing my actions. I was not involved in any inappropriate conduct."... "In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty."

Yes, any public official would be inclined to think that pleading guilty to a sex crime when you're really innocent is the best way to put it behind you...

And this sort of disposition is available in many jurisdictions for first time offenders in cases such as this. That much is pretty well par for the course.

Also, have you noticed how Fox news has covered the altercation of a Dem congressman at some airport but never mentioned the FL incident and probably won't mention this one as well.

feel it is a more open field. If you get what I mean. A well run company is usually run by a man who is a well run person. My husband was on subs and this is how they ran and every other place he worked and I have also seen this with things my whole life. Like people seem to bring in the same types. I think their is a great quote by Tolstoy on just that but to early for me to seem to be able to quote it.

157. My head keeps playing a spoof of the song from musical Chicago

The song about 'I didn't do it' What a hoot to have a satire version featuring various GOP pols who have been caught in various stings of late.

Some clever soul could do a spoof of the whole musical and make it about GOP asshats in the clink trying to convince anybody who will listen that they really don't deserve to be locked up; there were such good reasons for their crimes. Ex-ten-u-a-tin' circumstances. Yeah dats it. Get my lawyer on da phone. I ain't talking ta any you guys witout my lawyer!

Cue the chorus: GOP politicians in satin shorts with little sequined sailor jumpers and navy caps, tight, bejeweled Army uniforms, fringe and bead trimmed Marine theme, skimpy cocktail dresses (they are all so patriotic) tap dancing their corrupt little hearts out. Their number decrease while da coppers cart off the hooligans, one by one, and throw 'em in da slammer.

Rudy Guiliani could play a part. It would make him happy to have another event to do his drag queen bit. Abramoff could play the shyster lawyer. He has hats!

Which evilDUer is up for the challenge? It'd be a realy box office hit!

``Call Boys Took Midnight Tour of White House.''

Chapter -XXI- Omaha
http://www.tarpley.net/bush21.htm

On the morning of June 29, 1989, pandemonium erupted in the corridors of power in the nation's capital. ``Homosexual Prostitution Probe Ensnares Official of Bush, Reagan,'' screamed the front-page headline of the Washington Times with the kicker ``Call Boys Took Midnight Tour of White House.''
http://www.tarpley.net/bush21.htm

he Times reported, ``A homosexual prostitution ring is under investigation by federal and District authorities and includes among its clients key officials of the Reagan and Bush administrations, military officers, congressional aides and U.S. and foreign businessmen with close ties to Washington's political elite.''

The expose centered on the role of one Craig Spence, a Republican powerbroker known for his lavish ``power cocktail'' parties. Spence was well connected. He celebrated Independence Day 1988 by conducting a midnight tour of the White House in the company of two teenage male prostitutes among others in his party.

Rumors circulated that a list existed of some 200 Washington prominents who had used the call boy service. The Number Two in charge of personnel affairs at the White House, who was responsible for filling all the top civil service posts in the federal bureaucracy, and Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole's chief of staff, were two individuals publicly identified as patrons of the call boy ring.

Two of the ring's call boys were allegedly KGB operatives, according to a retired general from the Defense Intelligence Agency interviewed by the press. But the evidence seemed to point to a CIA sexual blackmail operation, instead. Spence's entire mansion was covered with hidden microphones, two-way mirrors and video cameras, ever ready to capture the indiscretions of Washington's high, mighty and perverse. The political criteria for proper sexual comportment had long been established in Washington: Any kinkiness goes, so long as you don't get caught. The popular proverb was that the only way a politician could hurt his career was if he were ``caught with a dead woman or a live boy'' in his bed.

Months after the scandal had died down, and a few weeks before he allegedly committed suicide, Spence was asked who had given him the ``key'' to the White House. The Washington Times reported that ``Mr. Spence hinted the tours were arranged by `top level' persons, including Donald Gregg, national security advisor to Vice President Bush''@s1 and later U.S. ambassador to South Korea.

We have already had occasion to examine Don Gregg's role in Iran-Contra, and have observed his curious performance when testifying under oath before congressional committees. Gregg indignantly denied any connection to Spence, yet it is public record that Spence had sponsored a dinner in Gregg's honor in the spring of 1989 at Washington's posh Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown.

George Bush was less than pleased with the media coverage of the prostitution charges and kept abreast of the scandal as it mushroomed. The Washington Times reported in an article titled ``White House Mute on Call Boy Scandal,'' that ``White House sources confirmed that President Bush has followed the story of the late night visit and Mr. Spence's links to a homosexual prostitution ring under investigation by federal authorities since they were disclosed June 29 in the Washington Times. But top officials will not discuss the story's substance, reportedly even among themselves.

``Press officers have rebuffed repeated requests to obtain Mr. Bush's reaction and decline to discuss investigations or fall out from the disclosures.''@s2 By midsummer, the scandal had been buried. The President had managed to avoid giving a single press conference where he would surely have been asked to comment.

As the call boy ring affair dominated the cocktail gossip circuit in Washington, another scandal, halfway across the country in the state of Nebraska, peaked. Again this scandal knocked on the President's door.

A black Republican who had been a leader in organizing minority support for the President's 1988 campaign and who proudly displayed a photo of himself and the President, arm in arm, in his Omaha home, was at the center of a sex and money scandal that continues to rock the Cornhusker state.

The scandal originated with the collapse of the minority-oriented Franklin Community Credit Union in Omaha, directed by Lawrence E. King, Jr., a nationally influential black Republican who sang the national anthem at both the 1984 and 1988 Republican conventions. King became the subject of the Nebraska Senate's investigation conducted by the specially created ``Franklin Committee'' to probe charges of embezzlement. In November 1988, King's offices were raided by the FBI and $40 million was discovered missing. Within weeks, the Nebraska Senate, which initially opened the inquiry to find out where the money had gone, instead found itself questioning young adults and teenagers who said that they had been child prostitutes. Social workers and state child-care administrators accused King of running a child prostitution ring. The charges grew with the former police chief of Omaha, the publisher of the state's largest daily newspaper, and several other political associates of King, finding themselves accused of patronizing the child prostitution ring.

King is now serving a 15-year federal prison sentence for defrauding the Omaha-based credit union. But the magazines Avvenimenti of Italy and Pronto of Spain, among others, have charged that King's crimes were more serious: that he ran a national child prostitution ring that serviced the political and business elite of both Republican and Democratic parties. Child victims of King's operations charged him with participation in at least one satanic ritual murder of a child several years ago. The Washington Post, New York Times, Village Voice and National Law Journal covered the full range of accusations after the story broke in November of 1988. King's money machinations were also linked to the Iran-Contra affair, and some say that King provided the CIA with information garnered from his alleged activities as a ``pimp'' for the high and mighty.

195. Now it's being glossed over
Without quoting the whole thing, which is here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070828/ap_on_go_co/craig_arrest

This is what they're saying now... you have to do a bit of reading to get to the "lewd conduct part".

MINNEAPOLIS - Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho pleaded guilty this month to misdemeanor disorderly conduct after being arrested at the Minneapolis airport.

A Hennepin County court docket showed Craig pleading guilty to the disorderly conduct charge Aug. 8, with the court dismissing a charge of gross misdemeanor interference to privacy.

The court docket said the Republican senator paid $575 in fines and fees. He was put on unsupervised probation for a year. A sentence of 10 days in the county workhouse was stayed.

Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, which first reported the case, said on its Web site Monday that Craig was arrested June 11 by a plainclothes officer investigating complaints of lewd conduct in a men's restroom at the airport.

Craig said in a statement issued by his office that he was not involved in any inappropriate conduct.

"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions," he said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."

Craig, 62, is married and in his third term in the Senate. He is up for re-election next year. He was a member of the House for 10 years before winning election to the Senate in 1990.

He has been one of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's top Senate supporters, serving as a Senate liaison for the campaign since February. As word spread of Craig's guilty plea, a Romney campaign spokesman, Matt Rhoades, said in a statement: "Senator Craig has stepped down from his role with the campaign. He did not want to be a distraction and we accept his decision."
...
Roll Call, citing the report, said Sgt. Dave Karsnia made the arrest after an encounter in which he was seated in a stall next to a stall occupied by Craig. Karsnia described Craig tapping his foot, which Karsnia said he "recognized as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."

What is with these republicans and public restrooms. Must have to do with them being taught that sex is dirty. Hello, those are stalls, not voting booths. These guys act as if they are trying to get caught. Surely the GOP would provide them with male prostitutes if they wanted them. Makes me wonder if Cheney and Rove ever got it on with each other.

I can't wait to hear what Ed Schultz has to say about this. Also, paging Larry Flynt....I have to believe that he's got the goods on him too....wow, this is going to get interesting. And ofcourse, no big surprise, that he is also one of the biggest homophobes and anti-gay Senators.

218. What is it with these guys?
What is it with these guys?

Not exactly a startling or unique observation, but want to hear my guess?

If one has doubts about one's preferences and can't stand to formulate, never mind actually even consider and deal with the question, then the remaining strategy is to bluff it out and act all manly-manish and join the republican party.

But then .....there's this anxiety about how good the bluff is - it must be tested!

Test, test, test.

(of course such testing could be a rationalization allowing one to engage in behavior one desired to engage in in the first place.)

How do you know how strong the "bluff" is? Well the bad news for Mr. Republican is that, probably, it's only as strong as the next-to-last thing you did to test it before you got outed.

What a twisted, viciously cyclic, waste of time and attention.

In my experience the few people I've met that felt that homosexuality was a problem they had to bring up and complain about were a little off into that territory anyway. Many that yodeled the loudest were out within six months. In the long run that's actually a healthy result. (Assuming our society retains at least whatever modicum of tolerance it currently has.)

Imagine living decades worrying about such stuff.

Imagine having your career, family & livelihood all rooted in an ethos that would drop you like a hot potato if it found out.

I have sympathy for those for whom it is or was a personal and private struggle, but it's tough not feel a bit of grim satisfaction when those aid and abet fervent persecutors finally take their place in that circular firing squad the religious right seems so apt in assembling.

And that's just one twisted kernel of the contemporary Republican party.

Senator Craig ...
Open your mind, come over to our side ... it's really a relief to shed the lies and the shams ... :)
At the end of the day, it's OK to be gay o'er here. You don't have to go to bathroom stalls to get some.

You really have to love when hypocrisy is so blatantly showcased.

Peace.

228. The real perversion here is that in his ambition, he apparently
lived a lie rather than in consonance with his true nature. Not surprised that it was a Republican - same crap, different day.

after all the poor guy is married with children... obviously he is straight.... no one ever heard of a married man with kids who was a closet gay man....

I feel sorry for the man's wife, she deserved better... imagine being married to someone who doesn't find you sexually attractive but is with you to fit into what society says is "normal" and "decent."

275. I don't feel sorry for her at all
Call me mean, call me cold. But, I don't feel sorry for her at all. Everyone has known about Craig since his college days. This is not the first incident of this kind and it has not been a secret. She is his enabler by providing cover for him with full knowledge of what he is. Her reasons?- money, a home, the prestige of being a Senator's wife? Who knows or cares, but I don't feel sorry for her. It could have been your teenage son in the stall next to him and she has been protecting this kind of behavior. :puke:

252. Idaho senator fined for lewd behavior at Minneapolis airport
Source: Star Tribune

The Idaho Republican arrested June 11 in an MSP restroom entered a guilty plea Aug. 8.

Last update: August 28, 2007 – 12:13 AM

U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, an Idaho Republican, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in Minnesota this month after being arrested by a plainclothes police officer investigating complaints of lewd conduct in a men's restroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Craig denied the police account of what occurred and said he erred in pleading guilty.

<snip>

Craig has been one of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's top Senate supporters, serving as a Senate liaison for the campaign since February. As word spread of Craig's guilty plea, a Romney campaign spokesman, Matt Rhoades, said in a statement: "Senator Craig has stepped down from his role with the campaign. He did not want to be a distraction and we accept his decision."

Oops...This article says Craig tried to play footsie with an undercover police officer in the next stall! Kinda hard to wriggle your way out of that one.

Craig, 62, is married and in his third term in the Senate, but hasn't said if he plans to run again in '08.

Typical family values for Republican elected officials!

All this time, I thought that Pubbies described gays as sex-obsessed degenerates who seek out anonymous sex in public bathrooms because they're bigots, or pandering to bigots.

Now, I recognize it as a textbook case of what psychologists call "projection".

Minneapolis Airport Restroom Sting Nabs Idaho Senator

http://www.minnesotamonitor.com/showDiary.do;jsessionid=FAA388DB6725F8152161FFC1C2094B17?diaryId=2309

Karsnia was in the restroom as part of a sting operation to clamp down on lewd behavior. The restroom where Craig was arrested is well known among men who seek sex in public places.
Squirt.org is a site that runs a bulletin board for such men. "If you enter from the terminal, turn left and go past wash basins, urinals to the back where the stalls are. This place is THE most cruisy public place I have been," wrote one poster. "Just passed thru here the other day. This place is so hot. This place has a constant flow and variety of hot guys," wrote another. Even another poster wrote, "This is the best spot for anonymous action I've ever seen." Of all the postings in Minnesota, the airport restroom was ranked the top by that website.

The site, Squirt.org, lists how to get there: "Across from Food Court. Go through security to main Mezzanine where main shopping is located. Look for Starbucks Coffee stand and Men's Room is across from there," what to expect: "Very cruisy, no security cameras or guards. Most of the time, men will show themselves to you at the urinals and invite into stalls or nearby hotels. Plenty of dark stall action, too!Update: No one is permitted beyond the security checkpoints without an airline ticket now," and some of the biggest pet peeves: "Stall hoggers! Get off and get out! Cleaning crews may be overly curious, but won't interfere."

The details of Craig's arrest are not unique. According to a post in June at cruisingforsex.com, another public sex site, "Twenty people were arrested within the past week. Plainclothes officers wait in the stalls and tap their feet and even put their foot on yours and then arrest you when you look under the stall wall."
