Vick: 'I need to grow up'
Source: CNN.com

RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) -- Shortly after entering a guilty plea Monday to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge, suspended NFL quarterback Michael Vick apologized "for all the things that I've done and that I've allowed to happen."

In addition to making apologies to Atlanta Falcons teammates, his coach and the National Football League, Vick also said he was sorry "to all the young kids out there for my immature acts."

<snip>

"I take full responsibility for my actions," Vick said. "Not for one second will I sit right here and point the finger and try to blame anybody else for my actions or what I've done.

<snip>

He said, "Through this situation I've found Jesus."

I guess this story got lost in the Gonzo frenzy.

I post it for the sake of completeness and good news reporting.

1. it'll mean even more when he comes clean about the gambling
so the NFL can fire him. :)

I ain't so sure Jesus will claim the dog-killer, though. He's probably up there cringing, going 'crap, don't bring my name into this'.

7. Jesus claims everybody
(I'm an atheist, but I do think it's comical the way the very precept of forgiveness preached by Jesus is thrown out the window by Christians. It's like Nietzsche said: Jesus was interesting. The Christians, on the other hand...)

11. "Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life"
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Make me, oh make me, Lord more than I am
Make me a piece in your master game plan
Free from the earthly tempestion below
I’ve got the will, Lord if you’ve got the toe.

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Take all the brothers who’ve gone on before
And all of the sisters who’ve knocked on your door
All the departed dear loved ones of mine
Stick’em up front in the offensive line.

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

Yeah, Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life.

39. Killing cats is a classic indicator of a future serial killer/psychopath
And this guy's idea of childhood fun was setting dogs on cats in "closed environments".
He talks of "growing up" as if he's only confessed to TP-ing a neighbor's house.

"He talks of "growing up" as if he's only confessed to TP-ing a neighbor's house. "

That's right. He can't distinguish between the two.
This guy is a classic psychopath getting his rocks off killing innocent animals and I hope he gets a long sentence. It'll be good keeping this creep off the streets as long as possible.

19. What in the heck does dog torture have to do with finding Jesus???
I'm sure I'm missing something here, but it wouldn't be the first time. Sure doesn't sound anything like the Jesus I was taught about.

One of the Vick supporters was interviewed on the radio here in downtown Richmond this morning. She said she knew he had "done wrong" but he "ought to be forgiven." And I'd be willing to bet you big bucks she's also one of those who claims he's innocent until found guilty at trial. Talk about mixed-up logic!

22. Forgiveness
If you are genuinely repentant for your sins, then Jesus/GOD forgives you.

Oftentimes, you find grace in the midst of evil.

Not too plausible for me but I am not a Christian.

Vick? We will never know what is in his heart. But it is not too hard to be cynical of his genuiness.

35. Absolutely nothing
Just one more cynical attempt to rehabilitate his image.

I'm not a holy roller, but I sure as hell get sick and tired of the word JESUS being used as a talisman, as if pronouncing the name makes things all better.

Do your time and shut the hell up, Mike. Were you invoking Jesus' name when the dogs were ripping each other to shreds, or when you killed the losers? Thought not.

Saw another sign at that protest this morning..."He who is without sin cast the first stone," or some such. That ain't working for me, either.

40. Im 100% with you, AOD.
I'm no holy roller either - but do have a pretty good grip on my own faith (and yes, it's Christian, so anybody who wants to take a potshot, go right ahead). But I always wonder in these situations what kind of Jesus is at work here.

There's the Jesus who tells some people to hate gay people ...

There's the Jesus who says everybody ought to get a gun, then we'd all be OK ...

There's the Jesus who says it's perfectly fine to sit in judgment of other folks (Jerry Falwell has to figure prominently in this group)...

I just maintain that the Jesus I know something about doesn't seem to be the same one most of these people are talking about. And yes, I'll be the first to say, Jesus is all about forgiveness, but it sure seems easy to find that grandstand, doesn't it.

What Vick said is just an attempt to reduce his sentence - nothing different then most criminals do before sentencing and while appearing in front of parole boards.

It's nice he apologized but he goes to far with the BS finding Jesus crap. His actions will speak for him and only time will tell but too many get sucked in to this "I found Jesus" and want to forgive and forget right there. Let him do his time and we will see if he changes over time.

54. I don't understand that
It seems to me that the team should have legal standing to sue him, regardless of whether he is still a member of the team. But I suppose there could be some subtlety of contract law involved (e.g. cutting him would mean voluntarily voiding the contract, thus invalidating standing to sue?).

51. You are grown up, you need to use your head
I kinda see the NAACP point that Vick has been harshly judged on this matter. I mean for some to call for the death penalty, come on. But the local NAACP maybe made one mistake and that was to demand that Vick be allowed to play football again before the matter ran it's course. I think it would have been wiser for them to state that after Vick pays his debts and shows remorse the NFL and the Atlanta area should welcome Vick back with open arms. But being in Atlanta, I'm certain the pressure was quite acute and they felt a need to be very, very defensive of Vick. But I saw part of Vick's news conference and he seemed quite sincere and remorseful, he did himself very, very good.
