South Florida Sun-SentinalUniversity of Miami researchers will scour the medical files of 11 million Humana Inc. patients looking for dangerous effects from prescription drugs, under a new project unveiled Wednesday.
Using the huge database of real-world medication experience, the research collaborative aims to detect risky drugs and prescribing practices sooner, which could prevent side effects, medication errors and deaths, university officials said.

The database will be stripped so the identities of Humana patients — 950,000 in Florida — will not be revealed to researchers.

National panels have been studying the FDA approval system to see why some drugs pass testing, only to cause harm once on the market.
