Bush's visit leaves some residents angry, but not over politics

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Towed and ticketed, several people on the Country Club Plaza are griping about President Bush's visit to the metro.

The president's motorcade made many in the metro smile Wednesday, as he was seen breakfasting with dignitaries and made a speech at the VFW convention.

Bill Cary was not among them, but it had nothing to do with politics.

......

He is angry because at midnight Wednesday morning, the city towed his car because it was parked in front of his Plaza apartment on Roanoke Parkway. The problem was that the president's motorcade used Roanoke Parkway. As a result, so for security reasons, police made it an emergency no-parking zone and towed several cars overnight – including Bill's.

I saw this on the news last night and had to post it. This is so asinine. No warning or nothing. He also had to pay a $145 towing fee and got a $38 ticket. All this because President Pissypants paid a visit.

that people would change their party affiliation just because their cars were towed? :eyes:

2. And he was in Kansas City to give a speech
to a group, the VFW, a bunch of old farts who don't give one fuck about our troops. Suck it up and die for your country boy!

5. Um . . .
Why would someone who fought at Normandy, for instance, not care about our troops. They've been there, done that. They probably understand better than those of us who have never been to war just what today's soldiers are going through.

Big assumption you've made there, Boss.

8. If they cared for the troops
why would they back the lying monster in the white house and urge him to keep them in harms way for no apparent reason? I served in a combat zone and I'm not cheering wildly for bush and cheney like VFW and American Legion Members do. My father in law lost his left arm during the D-Day invasion and he left those organizations because of their stance of never ending war. He certainly would never cheer on bush and his lies for any reason; in fact I know he's cursing him from his grave.

If they support bush with the power of their organization, they are not supporting our troops. They are dying for lies because the commander in chief is an incompetent fool. And its sad to see those who have actually done something for our country supporting that nonsense.

... this was taken during Blivet's 2005 appearance before the VFW - I snagged it from Yahoo News.
Somehow I don't think this particular vet likes him a whole lot: I'm sure there are more like him.

There are a whole bunch of vets who have incredible problems with the liar in thief. Great pic, that old fart can detect the bs when he hears it.

I don't use Old Fart as deragotory. I'm an old fart veteran. Its a term of endearment amongst ourselves.

27. I don't have respect for the official stances of these organizations
Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of members of the VFW and the American Legion who aren't warmongers who support * no matter what. But honestly, and simply based on the limited knowledge I have of them, the official stances of these organizations regarding America's use of the military often disappoint me. To a point, my feelings come from my grandfather, a WWII veteran, who has never had any use for these organizations or interest in becoming a member, because of their political views and views on military matters. In the case of the American Legion, especially, they have a long history of sympathy to reactionary politics. My feelings are similar to how I feel about the NRA: I have no doubt there are a number of gun owners in the NRA who I can see eye to eye with, but I don't respect the organization as a whole because of their politics and the tactics of their leadership.

14. No, it was really a pretty big convention. about 5,000
people attended and Hillary and Obama and McCain and Thompson were all there and gave speeches.

And a lot of soldiers from the base at Leavenworth came in for the speeches. It really was a pretty big deal.

so what's a mere $60K per hr to our great nation? :sarcasm: :puke:

This according to MoveOn.org's Aug. 2007 Cost of War data: "On average$275 million is spent every day on the war in Iraq..."

Most of the patrons of the Plaza are wealthy too. Does bu$h know that his visit hurt wealthy people?

WTF was he on the Plaza for? VFW wouldn't have met there. The Christmas Lights are on yet, WTF?

On a different subject. Are the Republicans holding a primary next year? I haven't heard a thing about it, so I'm starting to think it was canceled.

25. Person towing the vehicle may be responsible if emergency order
was conducted wihtout due process.

The article says no notice was given.

So, if no notice is given, then it would seem the towtruck operators may bear some financial responsibility. Surely their contracts with the city or county presume that all tows are conducted legally. Who did the towing? Wonder what those contracts say precisely? If they are allowed to tow from a public street under such an emergency order, then it seems that the system has been rigged to allow the temporary confiscation of personal property without due process.

26. Between that and the huge traffic-tie up he caused. . . .
he didn't really enamor himself to a lot of Kansas Citians. My wife was stuck in traffic for over an hour (she works on the Plaza) because numnuts wanted to go across town for breakfast so everything got shut down. Even the local conservative talk show guys thought it was a little ridiculous. Same uproar happened when U2 shut down an expressway to use Kansas City as a backdrop for one of their videos. At least Bono is respected on the world stage though.

in the city at that time of day. They made it worth it for the city as a whole. Bush just cost us money.

30. Strange, because Chimpy is always going places, but has
anyone ever heard of such a big dust-up over it before?

Are they increasing security because of his sinking popularity?

Kansas is rather conservative, too - I recall reading "What's the Matter with Kansas-" Maybe it is the locals thinking that the pretzeldent is such a big deal and they made too big a deal of it?

Maybe they figured everyone would be thrilled to stop their day for the Chimperor.

When they are from outside the area.

So maybe they really are starting to think the Pretzeldent needs more space around him to protect him?

It will be interesting to see if this happens again in some other town

33. What's more confusing is that there is a Kansas City, Missouri
and a Kansas City, Kansas. The Missouri side has the larger population and is usually what people are referring to when they say "Kansas City". It's REALLY easy to get confused about all this :hi:
