(Former Alabama Gov. Don) Siegelman compares federal investigation of him to Watergate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman says in a letter from federal prison that he is confident his conviction will be overturned and a congressional probe will show that Republican politics was behind the probe of his Democratic administration.

Siegelman, in a handwritten letter to The Associated Press received Monday, said he believes former presidential aide Karl Rove was behind the federal investigation.

"I am also encouraged by The Congressional inquiry and upcoming investigation which should prove the political involvement and establish this Alabama case as the 'Watergate of 2008,'" Siegelman wrote.

Responding to questions in a letter sent by AP to Siegelman at the federal prison in Oakdale, La., the veteran political figure said, "You asked how I'm doing? I'm fine! My spirits have been uplifted because of my friends' prayers, letters and action. I am blessed and I give thanks to God many times each day."

2. K and R.
This story, IMHO, is the reason Rove resigned. He used his considerable influence to criminally railroad a popular Democratic Governor in Alabama into jail. I'm sure he thought at the time, as always, that his dirty shenanigi would never see the light of day.

Siegelman Case -- Bobo Acquitted
by: mooncat
Mon Aug 20, 2007 at 22:28:43 PM CDT

This was the beginning of the Siegelman case. Some of you may prefer the term witch hunt. I like fishing expedition. At any rate, after deliberating for 8 days, a jury acquitted Dr. Phillip Bobo on all counts.

A federal court jury acquitted Dr. Phillip Bobo of all charges Monday in a Medicaid fraud case that reached all the way to Gov. Don Siegelman's office and ended with federal prosecutors striking out three times.

"The verdict shows that the Phillip Bobo matter when it was brought against Gov. Siegelman was bogus. ... This is the same Justice Department who brought the case against Gov. Siegelman in Montgomery and that will be determined to also be bogus," defense attorney Vince Kilborn said.

William Stewart, a political scientist at the University of Alabama and a longtime observer of state politics, said the verdict helps those who claim Republican prosecutors have set their sights on Democratic politicians and those associated with them.

4. K&R
Alabama is a perfect testing ground for tactics in establishing the permanent Republican majority. People outside the state assume that Siegelman was corrupt and don't dig past the headline.
