"What we are calling these protest sites are in fact protest pens. They're like cages and they want to keep people in an area where they can manage them," said protester Trevor Haché, who was part of a caravan of cyclists who rode from Ottawa to join the protest. "We're going to protest where we want to protest. It's our democratic right."

'A zip-lock of a security perimeter'

The SPP is described by Ottawa as a "dialogue" not a treaty, and as such doesn't require a vote in Parliament or changes in law.

Critics such as the Council of Canadians have said the SPP is antidemocratic.

"If this is such a wonderful deal and it is about protecting North Americans from shoddy products or whatever they're now saying … then be proud of it, stand up, tell us what's in it … and send it to our Parliament for oversight," Maude Barlow, head of the Council of Canadians, told CBC News in an interview from Ottawa Monday morning.

1. That's along zip lock
the "no go" perimeter is alleged to be a radius of 15 miles. I make that 94 miles'ish.

4. Open a free account with Photobucket or other free image hosting site.
Save the image you want to post to your hard drive, upload it to Photobucket, and then grab the provided code for the Direct Link tag and add it to your post.

Need help? There are plenty of image veterans here at DU.

What you don't want to do is hotlink from the site you found the image at, ever. That's a bandwidth violation. Also be mindful of copyright. :hi:

5. I would be happy to help...
go to the photo and right click, chose properties and then copy the html, then just paste it into your post.

With Yahoo photos like this one there is a lot of crap after the '.jpg' end. just delete all of that up to the .jpg and it should appear. Anyplace else I post photos from does not have that problem, they end in .gif or .jpg and it works fine.

good luck! :)

8. One thing i noticed.
The Storm Troopers in Canada are clearly identified by a number stenciled across the front on their helmuts.

In the USA, the SS remove all ID from their Star Wars Uniforms.

16. Our Canadian riot squads might be up to date
and equal to the best in the USA, but sadly Canadian undercover cop/agent provacateurs are still somewhat lacking in skill and know-how. They allow themselves to be outed in front of cameras before they can start their planned riot. LOL Check out this Youtube video to see how. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St1-WTc1kow (It's also posted in the DU political videos forum.)

6. Police Tear Gas, Pepper Spray Protesters At Montebello Summit
MONTEBELLO, Que. (CP) - Riot police fired tear gas and pepper spray to hold back protesters outside the Chateau Montebello resort Monday as Stephen Harper met George W. Bush to kick off the North American Leaders' Summit.

A line of police in riot gear jostled with about 50 demonstrators - the vanguard of hundreds who marched on the front gate of the summit compound shouting taunts.

Officers eventually used pepper spray and at least one canister of tear gas to restrain the protesters, who responded by flinging rocks and branches. Two protesters were hauled away in handcuffs.

The confrontation settled into a face-to-face standoff between a hardcore group of protesters and police, while other demonstrators sat down or backed off.

--
Asked by reporters whether he'd gotten a look at the protesters, Harper dismissed the demonstration: "I've heard it's nothing. A couple hundred? It's sad."

9. I was there...
We were much more than "hundreds" but some things complicated it all.

First, the "security perimeter" was huge. They blocked everything from miles around. There were about 2000 cops overall, including a solid 250 riot policemen. Pretty agressive as well, there were a dozens injured among the protesters, at least.

Second and most importantly, Montebello is far from everything. Really. There's no bus service between Montebello and Montreal or Quebec & Montebello (main cities in Quebec). In fact, there barely is any bus riding to Montebello and they were evidently cancelled.

So we had to organize it all from scratch, with little to no funding, making new comities to get some money for buses and the likes. From where I live - near Montreal, it took me 1h30 of car to get there, with a few friends.

And lastly, the SPP isn't "mainstream" as of yet and our planned protest was ridiculed in advance by nearly every major newspaper. Most of them didn't even mention the SPP thing, saying it was a regular NAFTA meeting, etc.

Not the first time they host their meeting in a far remote place. It's becoming a common tactic for them, they do that so they can later say: "see, no big deal, a couple thousands bothered to show".

Anyway, the struggle continues. We're all in the same boat. ;)

Tired Ravachol, from Quebec, Canada.
