At least 200 dead after Iraq blasts

BAGHDAD - Rescuers dug through the muddy wreckage of collapsed clay houses in northwest Iraq on Wednesday, uncovering at least 200 victims of suicide truck bombings that the U.S. military blamed on al-Qaida.

The victims of the war's second-deadliest attack were members of a small Kurdish sect, the Yazidis, who have been the target of Muslim extremists who consider them infidels.

"This is an act of ethnic cleansing, if you will, almost genocide, when you consider the fact of the target they attacked, and the fact that these Yazidis are really out in a very remote part of Ninevah province where they're, there is very little security, and really no security required up until this point," Army Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, the commander of U.S. forces in northern Iraq, told CNN.

Mixon said last month that he proposed reducing American troop levels in Ninevah and predicted the province would shift to Iraqi government control as early as this month. It was unclear whether that projection would hold after Tuesday's staggering death tolls.

MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - More than 200 people were slaughtered when four suicide truck bombs ripped through the ancient Yazidi religious sect in northern Iraq in the bloodiest coordinated attacks of the four-year war.

Rescue workers searched frantically for survivors under the rubble of pancaked homes on Wednesday after bombers detonated four explosive-laden trucks late Tuesday in two villages inhabited by members of the Yazidi minority.

Embattled Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki blamed extremists for the "heinous crime" while the US military fingered Al-Qaeda's affiliates, who have claimed a string of spectacular attacks in Iraq's bloody sectarian conflict.

President Jalal Talabani, himself a Kurd, said the victims were "Kurdish Yazidis" who fell to a "genocide war launched by the terrorists and takfiris (extremists) against the Iraqi people."

I would think that if AQ did this, it would be counter-productive. I am not going to say it is impossible, as I cannot say with certainty that al Qaida was created for the sole purpose of responding to American terrorism in the mideast; however, I was under the impression that they exist to protect muslim life, of any ilk, rather than destroy it.

The sect has been under fire since some members stoned a Yazidi teenager to death in April. She had converted to Islam and fled her family with a Muslim boyfriend, and police said 18-year-old Duaa Khalil Aswad was killed by relatives who disapproved of the match.

A grainy video showing gruesome scenes of the woman's killing was later posted on Iraqi Web sites. Its authenticity could not be independently verified, but recent attacks on Yazidis have been blamed on al-Qaida-linked Sunni insurgents seeking revenge.

Kill 200 infidels, debate if it's ethnic cleansing and ignore the two muslim sects that have been going at it for 1,000 years.

Yazidi are such a minority that they are threatened with extinction at the hands of the jihadi's by the time a meaningless,toothless resolution is passed by the UN.
