US soldiers killed in Iraq attacks
One US soldier has been killed and six were wounded when their vehicle hit an explosive device in the town of Mosul, where Saddam Hussein's two sons were killed overnight.

A US military spokesman says the vehicle had hit a mine or home-made explosive device.

The soldier was the second killed in Iraq today.

Another soldier was killed and two were wounded near the restive town of Ramadi, west of Baghdad, when their convoy was attacked with an improvised explosive.

The US military says the soldiers were from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Ramadi is in the "Sunni triangle" to the north and west of Baghdad where many of the guerrilla attacks on US troops have been concentrated.

2. But But But
They TOLD ME that the killing of Uday and Qusay was going to put a stop to these attacks!!!

Riiiight.

If anything, now that the threat of the return of the Hussein family is lessened, the guerrilla attacks will heat up.

4. Interesting, maybe they're waiting for something.

Interesting theory. Perhaps the islamist as well as other revolutionary enemies of Sadam are sitting back letting us clean up Bath Party members. Once they're sure Sadam isn't coming back, they'll be free to kill our troops thinking they'll get the government they want once they kick us out. If they wait a bit they might also have more support from an angry population.

It's going to be interesting. Will the different factions cooperate or turn on each other? Will the US try to turn them against each other (divide an conquere)? If/When the US is vanquished will those factions turn on each other?

I don't envy the troops.

6. If you were
a member of a group savagely oppressed by Hussein, betrayed multiple times by the US/UK/UN, subject to punishing sanctions for years (US/UK/UN), the victim of purges and mass murders by US/UK sponsored and supported dictators (as Hussein et al were)... what would YOU do in the current situation?

I would wait for the two more powerful parties to beat each other up, alienate everyone in the country in the process, and eliminate much of each others' strengths, popularity and credibility over the course of a few months.

Egg things on a bit with some judicious sabotage, assassinations, and etc...and then start sniping at the remaining targets when the initial dust settles...

>> Will the different factions cooperate or turn on each other?

Both -- first they will cooperate, then they will turn on each other and run to their various sponsors (Turkey, Iran, Syria, Saudi?) later on.

>> Will the US try to turn them against each other?

The US is pretty much hated by most of those factions (like the Kurds, the Sunni, and the Shi'ia) and they ALREADY hate each other.

>> If/When the US is vanquished will those factions turn on each other?

Vanquished? More like run out of town bankrupt and humiliated. And yes, they will turn on each other.

I think Iraq will end up partitioned into Northern Kurdville, Southern Shiopolis, and Central/Western Sunnivale Farms.

9. THIS IS THE BALKANS OF SOUTHWEST ASIA
Any serious student of history, will notice the similiarity of this situation and the provinces of what used to be Tito's Yugoslavia.

Oh there is a dfference here and there, but religious and ethnic diversity between 3 or more groups, always results in perpetual war and conflict.

Especially if its a blood vendetta like the present one.

3. This is what is being missed
Let us connect some dots, shall we?

Lets assume for a second that indeed Udday and Qussay were
killed today... for once lets give them the benefit of the
doubt

Where were they killed?

Mossul

Where did this attack that killed one of our sons
and daughers today?

Mossul

Ok now lets follow the yellow brick road here, where is
Mossul?

In the North, in the Kurdish Controlled area... which means
this is not a Sunni or Shia controlled area... boys and girls
our poor planning, and the fact that Iraqis love their country
this may mean these are just the prelims for the upcoming
rebelion... and just like Tet oh a generation ago, it is
going to catch DoD by surprise... for the usual suspects...
they have refused to listen to anybody with even half a clue, let
alone anybody with a full clue.

Anybody willing to run a collection to collect a clue to
send to the Department of Defense?

7. O.K., so here's my two eurocent
- drive out the neocons
- admit the guilt
- set up a withdrawal/peace plan as asked by the U.N.
- get another U.N. resolution to put in peace keeping forces NOT under U.S. command
- get the heck out
- don't forget to pay reparations
- stay out of other similar raids

OTHERWISE

this may well ruin the U.S. for decades to come.

11. every time I see that they are quoting
Chalabi, my skin crawls - this guy is thoroughly discredited - he is the one that Judith Miller from the NYT was playing in the desert with - he is the one that the OSP was basing their "findings" on - he is so full of absolute crap that his eyes are brown -

he left Iraq in 1958 - he embezzled 40 mil from a bank in Jordan - he has been on the CIA payroll for years and done nothing but milk the US taxpayer and now he thinks that he should be awarded the "presidential contract" for Iraq -

sheesh!
