No sound from 6 trapped Utah miners

By GARANCE BURKE, Associated Press Writer 34 minutes ago

HUNTINGTON, Utah - A tiny microphone lowered deep into the earth early Friday picked up no evidence that six coal miners caught in a cave-in four days ago were still alive. But an air sample indicated there was enough oxygen to breathe in the chamber where the miners were trapped, and rescuers vowed to keep digging toward them.

Using a steel drill bit to bore a 2 1/2-inch wide hole more than 1,800 feet into the mountain site of Monday's cave-in, rescuers finally broke through late Thursday into the cavity where authorities believe the miners are trapped. A crude measurement found enough oxygen to keep the men going if they survived the collapse.

Though the air sample indicated plenty of oxygen and no methane in the pocket, it also did not pick up carbon dioxide, the gas exhaled when people breathe.

........

"I wouldn't look at it as good or bad news. The work is not done," said Bob Murray, chairman of Murray Energy Corp., who added early Friday that oxygen levels suggested that if the men survived the collapse, "they're going to stay alive in that atmosphere."

1. I surely hope a miracle happens here...

But it's not looking good.. I actually feel bad for Bob Murray as well. You can tell this man is totally committed to his workers and their safety. The thing I cannot understand is why the media and the government said it was not an earthquake. But yet the rescue efforts have been stalled due to Seismic activity? That tells me that an earthquake brought that mine down. But others want us to believe that it was the fault of Mr. Murray.

Just another scandal, at the cost of American lives.. How many more?

2. Bob Murray is worried about one
thing his f---ing Repug ass. He comes from this area and has a history of Union busting and his mines are notorious for safety violations. The UMWA actually had a billboard of him on I-70 in Wheeling West Virginia a few years ago citing his safety record and anti-union activities in his mines.

6. I believe Mr. Murray put out the propaganda about the earthquake.
Perhaps to save his greedy ass. Why wouldn't he talk to the families of the trapped victims?

I never heard that rescue efforts were stalled due to Seismic activity. Have you got a link?

Take your pick :)

Huntington, Utah — Seismic activity has "totally shut down" efforts to reach six miners trapped below ground for more than 36 hours and wiped out all the work done in the past day, a mine executive said Tuesday.

12. The government seems to be on top of things and certainly don't
agree with Murray.

Government seismologists said that the pattern of ground-shaking picked up by their instruments around the time of the accident Monday appeared to have been caused not by an earthquake, but by the cave-in itself.

The update came hours after Murray sharply disagreed with the government over whether an earthquake caused the cave-in and whether the men were engaged in an often-dangerous form of mining.

Murray is just covering his bases, it appears. His tract record isn't anything to brag about.

15. You totally missed what the story states....
Seismic Activity halted the Rescue efforts, after the collapse... Seismic activity AFTER the collapse is a sign of after shock from an Earthquake. How are you missing this?

Others has said no earthquake existed.

I have no idea what's real in this case .. only time will tell.

19. old and inaccurate news fron TUESDAY
Seismologists and geophysicists have not been as sure, saying the seismic activity they measured appeared to stem from the mine's collapse.

On Thursday, University of California-Berkeley seismologist Douglas Dreger said the data show the shaking detected bore the signature of a collapse and "not a tectonic earthquake."

Experts have said the "aftershocks" could be the rock adjusting after the collapse.

11. Absolutely
If it was an earthquake which caused a cave-in, well, then it's "an act of God."

On the other hand, if his mining practices caused a cave-in so massive that it registered as a magnitude 3.9 quake, then he's got one colossal screw-up on his hands.

Right now, he's putting the best face on things that he can. He's denying that they were engaged in a dangerous practice. He's blaming everyone he can for any negative coverage. He wants to be seen as another victim, and not a murderer.

18. "seismic activity" = more cave ins.
"That tells me that an earthquake brought that mine down."

That tells me you're kinda gullible. Nothing personal.

If he cared about miner's safety, they would have a union and the proper safety equipment.

26. Profit and anything that could reduce it.
I saw him state that they placed the second bore hole exactly where they wanted it, "within fractions of an inch." How the hell does he know where the lower end of the borehole is on that sort of scale? The guy is a self serving, delusional SOB. I wonder what he thinks of all the coal currently being pulled out while excavating to reach the uncollapsed portions of the mine?

They should slide Hatch down that 2 1/2" hole so he can personally save each and every miner.

They're saying now that they think they accidentally drilled into a sealed area of the mine.

Second Drill Reaches Miners' Location

Saturday August 11, 2007 12:01 PM

By JENNIFER DOBNER

Associated Press Writer

HUNTINGTON, Utah (AP) - A second drill broke through
early Saturday to a mine shaft where officials hope to
find six workers who were trapped when the mine
collapsed, authorities said.

The hole cleared the way for a video camera to be
lowered in an effort to provide the first answers to the
miners' fate.

The hole, nearly 9 inches wide, reached the mine shaft
between 2 and 3 a.m., said Bob Murray, chief of mine
co-owner Murray Energy Corp. Crews were removing the
heavy drill steel and planned send down the camera
within a few hours.

There has been no word from the miners since the
Crandall Canyon mine collapsed early Monday. A
microphone lowered into a smaller hole yielded no
sounds of life and an air sample taken through the
2-inch hole detected little oxygen.
