Medics freed by Libya were tortured, Qaddafi's son says
Source: Reuters

The foreign medics freed last month from a Libyan prison were tortured into confessing that they had deliberately infected hundreds of children with the virus that causes AIDS, a son of the Libyan leader, Muammar el-Qaddafi, said in an interview broadcast Thursday

...

"There was torture with electricity," Qaddafi said, adding that the Libyan security authorities had threatened to "attack" the families of all of the imprisoned medics.
Qaddafi also said that some of the children had been infected with the virus before the medics even arrived in Libya and that one case had been reported after their arrest. "There is negligence," he said. "There is a disaster that took place, there is a tragedy, but it was not deliberate."

...

Libya commuted the death sentences against the six to life imprisonment after each of the infected children's families were paid $1 million.

Not to mention that Libya was granted access to weapons, half a billion dollars as ransom for the kidnapped nurses and doctors and additionally get delivered the means to spread nuclear bombs to terrorists worldwide, after financing the most cruel terrorist cells in the world over the last decades.

I guess this proved that the 'conspiracy nuts' were right: The whole 'trial' was nothing but a sham to get money, weapons and a nuclear reactor from the West. And now the Libyans even have the guts to openly admit all of this!

Well done, Bush and Sarkozy: You have shown the world that terrorism can be a very lucrative deal, when orchestrated correctly.

1. Seif al-Islam Qaddafi is trying to destabilize opponents in the government.
Seif al-Islam Qaddafi supports transforming his country into a bastion of neo-liberal economics. I think he is using this episode as a means to curry favor abroad, and to embarass certain elements who are resisting his economic program. This is not to say that these people were not tortured, I just think it's important to be aware of the context and potential motivations of Seif al-Islam Qaddafi.

2. Government?
Edited on Thu Aug-09-07 06:49 PM by SpikeTss
It's an unusually cruel regime and not a 'government' in Libya. In my opinion this interview only proves how unreliable and unstable the whole Libyan regime really is. It's one thing to kidnap and threatening to murder foreigners, who are trying to help a third world country. But it's something entirely different to openly admit your real intentions after receiving the ransom of half a billion dollars. It simply proves, how unreliable the Libyan state really is.

Which sane businessman would deal with Libya, after their have proved, that they are completely unreliable?

3. 12 Men Face Possible Death for Planning Peaceful Demonstration in Libya
Edited on Sat Aug-18-07 11:45 AM by SpikeTss
Terrible, but unfortunately true: The Libyan regime, more confident
than ever due to the strange support by the West, becomes more and more
irrational and erratic. Now the regime threatens again to kill a
foreigner in their country. This time a Danish person is among the
victims:

http://bbsnews.net/article.php/20070817122028729

"Twelve men are potentially facing death sentences, and two are missing in custody, their whereabouts unknown."

The two "disappeared" men are `Abd al-Rahman al-Qotaiwi, a fourth-year medical student who, together with the 12 men on trial, was reportedly organizing the demonstration, and Jum`a Boufayed, brother of the demonstration's main organizer, Dr. Idris Boufayed. Neither man has been seen since their arrests in mid-February, nor have the Libyan authorities provided information on their whereabouts.

Jum`a Boufayed was apparently not one of the demonstration planners. Security agents arrested him a few hours after he gave an interview to a Libyan website based abroad, www.libya-almostakbal.net, about his brother Idris' arrest.

...

The trial of the 12 men follows the release last month of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor convicted of infecting more than 400 Libyan children with HIV. They spent eight years in prison in a case marred by torture and unfair proceedings.

Shortly after their release on July 24, Libya purchased anti-tank missiles and communications systems worth more than $400 million from a company jointly controlled by French and German interests. The European Commission said it will negotiate an agreement with Libya that paves the way for renewed partnership and cooperation.

"Governments and businesses should not embrace Libya just because it released people from prison who should not have been there in the first place," Whitson said. "Meanwhile these 12 men -- one a European citizen -- remain unjustly behind bars, while two remain completely unaccounted for."

It's an interesting policy by Bush to award a regime, that has and still is supporting terrorism, kidnaps and kills foreigners ...

4. nobody wants to discuss the Lybian issue
imo, I think it was the French that worked out the best deal possible.

But, on a side note,speaking of terrorists,kidnappers of foreigners and suicide bombers for the cause;
an interesting comercial on Afghan TV

It's like preaching to the choir if you wonder just
how many people can afford a TV outside of Kabul?

5. Except for the Libyans
Edited on Sat Aug-18-07 01:37 PM by SpikeTss
Because they are bragging with what they succeeded to extort from the West
by threatening to murder a dozen of their citizens. Just look at the
interview with Qaddafi's son.

But it's like I said: It won't take long, until the Libyans find a new,
improved way of terrorism. Maybe they'll blow up another airplane,
maybe they'll abduct more foreigners and throw them into the black
hole of their 'prison' system. Libya is a very scary place these days!
