US House Majority Leader Sees Bipartisan Push To Leave Iraq
Source: Dow Jones

ST. INIGOES, Md. -(Dow Jones)- U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., on Monday said he expects Congress to mount a bipartisan push to start pulling out of Iraq, even though it will mean a showdown with the White House.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle will seek to change course in Iraq because the status quo is not sustainable, Hoyer told Dow Jones Newswires. As a result, he said, lawmakers may be more inclined to cross party lines and stand firm against the Bush administration.

"I'm hopeful that that will happen," Hoyer said, speaking on the sidelines of a combat drone demonstration in his southern Maryland home district.

Hoyer said U.S. troops will get the money they need for current operations, even though Congress has not yet passed the next round of war funding legislation. However, the next installment of war money may be tied directly to a change in strategy. "The funding may be focused on redeployment," Hoyer said.
