Edwards joins protest, gets one in return
Source: Boston Globe

From Jenn Abelson, Globe staff

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- John Edwards, speaking yesterday at a rally in support of striking Teamsters members here, encountered an unexpected protest of his own.

As Edwards praised the workers for their courage -- they have been on strike since last October -- the owner of the Standard Ready Mix cement plant unrolled a 10-foot-long "Hillary For President" banner in front of a truck next to the rally.

"Cute, that's cute," Edwards said, pausing for a moment as he watched the huge blue and white banner unfurl in support of his rival. It was the first stop for Edwards as he kicked off a two-day Iowa trip that focuses on trade and economic policies. Today he is delivering a major address in Cedar Rapids outlining what he bills as a smart and safe trade policy that grows the economy for all working families while protecting labor and environmental standards.

1. Reflective of the political landscape.
Edwards is helping to rally the striking workers while their employer unfurls a banner supporting Hillary.

Edwards on the side of the workers, Hillary on the side of capital. Any questions?

It does seem an accurate reflection of reality.

10. To be fair, just because the owner unrolled a Hillary banner
doesn't mean that Hillary is supporting *him*.

It may have been a calculated move to get exactly your reaction.

(I don't have a candidate yet, still considering, BTW)

16. You're suggesting that he used the Hillary banner as backhanded support for Edwards?
... Edwards, the guy who was helping to rally the workers striking his place?

A little too subtle, I think.

19. No, but could be as a tool against Hillary, too
Most likely a Republican, would be my guess.

But even if we was sincerely supporting Hillary, that in no way means she supports HIS agenda.

14. Hillary is a filthy corporatist DLC repulbican light dem. She does
not give a damn about the majority of us. All she cares about is her corporatist buddies and power. We need someone who cares about all of us too.

3. I agree.
I can see why a company owner would be in support of Hillary. She'll make it even easier to export American jobs over to Asia or down to Mexico so that the owner can make more $ b/c people in those countries will work for peanuts.

6. And considering what big business has inflicted upon us in recent years,
that's one of the best reasons for electing Edwards President in my opinion.

Big business has given us outsourcing, inferior quality, price fixing, price gouging, retirement account write offs, overtime without pay, suppressed minimum wage, and many, many more.

I don't trust big business any more than I trust George Bush.

The fact that the GOP and big business is so worried about Edwards tells me he's the one we need to fix our problems! Actions speak louder than words.

5. What do you expect from a corporation?
If corporations had their way, we'd all work for 5 cents a day and sleep in
the fields. We're headed that way, especially if we elect Hillary or
Romney/Guiliani.
